What is the purpose of the NATO alliance?

the Soviet thread is gone, so unless we are transferring the alliance to protection from other states and threats, what is it’s purpose?

I’ve heard claims that we transferred the protection from the Soviet’s to protection from Russia, but if Russia is a threat to NATO, why are member states undermining their security by getting energy from Russia?

Seriously, why Should we continue this alliance? How does it benefit us?
The NATO alliance is intended to...

1. keep the Russians out of Europe

2. establish, maintain and strengthen military and cultural ties between Old Europe and Nova Europa (the US and Canada, mostly)

-------------

Myopic, unthinking, short-term hyperbole to the contrary notwithstanding, in the long run, if NATO did not exist, we would invent it.

Hold our allies feet to the fire and nudge 'em into taking an increased share of the burden? Sure. Absolutely. Righteous. Go for it.

Destroy our most valuable international relationships and alliances in the process? Nahhhh... not worth it... not even close.

Only short-sighted retro-brained Isolationist fools and simpletons - and unwitting Useful (to Russia) Idiots - believe otherwise.

That depends on what you mean with "us"

The MIC (that thingy Eisenhower tried to warn you about) absolutely loves NATO and it's spending on war toys, warmongering neocons see NATO as a useful instrument to control their 'allies' and keep the fearmongering going (we need an alliance to protect us from the evil Russians/Chinese/Jihadis), the generals love NATO because it makes them look important, provides excuses for nice business trips and they get to play with their toys....

Having 35,000 troops in Germany makes no strategic sense if we're protecting everyone from Russia. Looks like Poland and the Ukraine are better borders to defend. Also should impose the same tariff on cars that Germany imposes on US cars (if not more!!) Germany has a trade surplus and we're borrowing money to defend it????

NATO allies are fighting along side us in Afghanistan. NATO allies are fighting in Syria.

Two places we have no business being in.

Trump's point about Germany was spot on. Why should the U.S. be subsidizing Germany's defense against Russia when they turn around and PAY them Billions to buy energy from them essentially SUPPORTING Russia, and funding their military?

It has benefitted the US by not allowing strongman dictatorships to rise to power and threaten peace and security.
??
Saddam [ started TWO wars ] /Ghaddafi/Vietnam War/Panama War/Balkans/
etc
many wars since NATO formation
there has been no peace

Eh, why does Germany need a 'defense' against Russia exactly?

And if they needed a defense I'm sure they could manage it themselves, allthough I'm not so sure that making the wehrmacht great again is a good idea

If Trump doesn't want to spend $$$ on the murican occupation force anymore then maybe it's a good idea to simply remove them

And Russia would have two German spigots to shut off, one labeled Oil and the other Natural Gas, if problems with the krauts or any of their NATO allies sprung up. Great strategery there, Merk, in a too many eggs in one basket sort of way.

That's a good question. Is Russia really a threat to Europe anymore? Now that Europe, and other NATO countries are openly TRADING with Russia, and engaged in normalized relations, why do we need NATO? Yes they have fought along side us in Iraq, and Afghanistan, so why not just form coalitions as needed for mutual support? We support our western allies with our military presence worldwide.

I don't think you understand how the real world operates, the only thing your worldwide 'military presence' supports is the MIC and the delusional necons who think the US empire deserves to rule the world

I don't agree that we should be the world's police, but nature hates a vacuum. If we are not there, China will be. So pick your poison. Us or them?

Oh, you're not the world's police, that's just propaganda for the murican people to justify the yuuuge war budget and all the endless coups/regime changes/liberations that go with it. The exceptional empire is more like the maffia, demanding protection $$$ and punish those who refuse to pay

The Chinese are a bit more civilized so they're probably the better choice

To do the things the United Nations will not. Afghanistan is a NATO operation.

I will let NATO explain
Why was NATO founded? - We are NATO

It allows the USA to help fund their failed Socialist economies
Speaking of which, how about you start today's Venezuela thread?

If Venezuela was part of NATO, they'd still be in business and the Chavez family would be worth $7 billion instead of 4

There is no mission in Afghanistan, we should not be there

that doesn't address what their purpose is.
Mutual defense. Aren't liberal democracies worth that anymore?

Against whom?

How does Germany making energy deals with Russia help the alliance stop Russia encroachment into Europe?

How does asking our allies to step up and fully fund the alliance hurt the alliance?
