Is having Greenland something that Americans will gain some personal benefit from? If not, why is Trump set on getting it?

Thanks for mentioning the Swiss. Far too many of we living in the USA only function as a piece of this nations system, ie. seldom voters on matters like the Swiss do. That was so helpful you brought up the Swiss.

Switzerland is the closest state in the world to have a direct democracy where citizens may challenge any law voted by the federal assembly. Switzerland’s Executive, Judicial and Legislative institutions are organized on federal, cantonal and communal levels. Switzerland, unlike many of other European states, does not have a President or a Prime Minister, and the country’s citizens are at the pinnacle of power.

Federal Assembly Of Switzerland

The Federal Assembly or the legislature is comprised of the National Council and the Council of States. The Council of States consists of 46 members who represent the cantons. After every four years, citizens of Switzerland vote for 200 members to constitute the National Council. The two chambers of parliament undertake legislative duties, and their sessions in parliament are open for citizens to attend. Any citizen can challenge any law or amendments proposed by the Federal Assembly.

Federal Council Of Switzerland

Six members constitute the Executive branch that is the Federal Council of Switzerland. They engage in what can be termed as the collective presidency and are elected by parliament. Each of these members leads a federal department (ministry). The country’s seven departments are Finances, Economy and Education, Internal Affairs, Defense and Sports, Energy, Traffic and Environment, and Justice.

The members of the Federal Council are from the four top parties in the country, and this greatly helps in forming a stable government. There is no limit to the term of office as a member of the Federal Council.

The President of the Swiss Confederation, a largely ceremonial role, rotates among the members every year. The representative President represents the country in international conferences, sets the agenda to be discussed during the weekly conferences and addresses the citizens on national holidays.

Judiciary Of Switzerland

Heading the judiciary is the Federal Supreme Court. Judges to the Court are elected by the Federal Assembly after every six years. The Supreme Court is the top court of appeal after the cantonal courts. The Supreme Court also receives appeals on administrative rulings of the federal administration.

Cantonal Administrations

Cantons in the Swish Federations organize themselves in respect to laws and policies, the federal constitution and minorities. Every canton has its constitution and elects an average of 5 members to make up the cantonal government. Most of the cantons also have one parliament. The federal government's delegates many of its duties to the cantonal administrations. 6 of the 26 cantons in the country are regarded as half-cantons, but all cantons have equal rights of autonomy and competencies. Cantons have armed police forces and run universities and hospitals and collect income taxes.

Elections And Referenda

The Swiss electorate can vote at least four times on matters of national proposals every year. The Swiss electorate has more say in national and cantonal affairs than anywhere else in the world. The Swiss electorates elect members of the cantonal governments and the Federal Assembly.

Political Parties In Switzerland

Five major parties are represented in the country’s Federal Council. These parties are Free Democratic Party, Christian Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, Conservative Democratic Party of Switzerland, and Swiss People’s Party.
You like the system?

You like the system?
I need to study it a lot more to intelligently analyze it. I did know one family from Switzerland, but our discussions never got into this subject matter. He was in California for several years and was going to return to his own country. Now I wish I had asked him about his homeland more.

Who said anything about "ownership"?...
You need to get up to speed on Chinese military ship movement in the Arctic Ocean....

Recent reports (late 2025) indicate an increased presence of Chinese research vessels and occasional warships operating near Alaska and in the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf (ECS), prompting US Coast Guard monitoring....
Trump.

This is blatantly false. Having missile strike capacity in Greenland would allow us to hit closer to the Russian mainland. Alaska is closer to Siberia which has barely any people living in it, let alone critical infrastructure.
Ding ding ding liberals don't understand how a 2d map works.

I’m sure would have opposed buying Alaska too
Of course, Trump is not advocating buying Greenland at all, now is he? Russia wanted to sell Alaska---at the time, derided as 'Seward's Folly'.
No one in the US, save Trump and his cronies, give a shit about Greenland..and Denmark does NOT wish to sell..even if Trump were to make a fair offer..which he won't.

780 Billion is more than fair lol considering we can take it for free.

What is the personal and economic benefit of getting Greenland for Americans. Will our economic, health, or income become better if we get it?

Trump said we need Greenland for our National Security:

but this map does not explain why we need it. After all, we have Alaska that is next to Russia, whereas Greenland is not close to Russia and even then, there are many other nations between Russia and Greenland and they are not supporting us taking over, even though if we took it over, they would have closer protection from us than they presently have:

By getting Greenland, no Americans are going to get any additional benefits for their lives. In fact, the expense of getting Greenland and defending it (against Russia and China) would actually take away benefits we need, such lower cost of Health Insurance, etc.

AI Overview

If the U.S. were to acquire Greenland, Americans would likely lose stability in NATO alliances and international trust, face significant economic burdens from managing a remote territory with high social costs, risk retaliatory trade wars (tariffs) from European allies, and deal with potentially complex internal secessionist movements inspired by Greenland's own independence drive.

Why then should we (Americans) support Trump's own STRONG desire to take over Greenland if the only benefit is for supporting his ego?

Natural resources, national security.

1) The assertion, 'we can take it for free' is complete Bullshit. The cost of military action..the risk of completely destroying any European alliances we might still have left..and the reality that NATO has a pretty good military of its own---makes that notion absurd.

2. The value of Greenland:

Hypothetical “Price Tag” for Buying Greenland

There’s no official market for buying a sovereign territory, but commentators and mock valuations have floated figures based on economic and resource value:
  • Some unofficial calculations suggest a conceptual value anywhere from ~$150 billion up to $1 trillion+ if you imagined pricing Greenland like a commercial asset.
  • A recent news report claimed in the context of political discourse Greenland might be “valued” at about $3.3 billion (its GDP) but with resource wealth potentially boosting that to ~$2.8 trillion—again, highly speculative and political.

⚠️ These kinds of price tags are theoretical exercises—not real offers or market prices—and depend completely on how you define “value” (GDP, resources, strategic importance, etc.).

We should care about Greenland

Its a very important strategic territory rich in minerals

Dont talk like that

We need the Euros as much as they need us

There is no upside to a breakup of NATO

Google gave me an interesting answer to this question:

" Is the Arctic becoming more strategically important to the USA?"

Yes, the Arctic is becoming significantly more strategically important to the U.S. due to climate change opening new shipping routes and access to resources, increased great-power competition (especially with Russia and China), and growing defense considerations like missile defense, leading the U.S. to issue new strategies focusing on enhanced military presence, alliances, and domain awareness in the region.

Key Drivers of Increased Importance:
  • Geopolitical Competition: Russia's military buildup and China's growing interest in Arctic resources and shipping lanes have elevated the region as a theater for strategic rivalry, prompting increased U.S. focus alongside NATO allies.
  • Climate Change: Melting ice makes the Arctic more accessible, opening shorter shipping routes (like the Northern Sea Route) and revealing vast natural resources, creating both economic opportunities and security challenges.
  • Economic Opportunities: Access to untapped natural resources, including rare earth minerals, and potential for increased trade via new sea lanes are major economic drivers.
  • National Security: The U.S. sees the Arctic as vital for homeland defense, with increased focus on domain awareness, missile defense (like Greenland's potential role in a "Golden Dome" system), and countering potential threats.

U.S. Response:
  • New Strategies: The 2022 National Security Strategy and the 2024 DoD Arctic Strategy formally recognize the Arctic as a national security priority, shifting from relative neglect to active engagement.
  • Enhanced Capabilities: The DoD plans to improve intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), communications, and cold-weather readiness.
  • Stronger Alliances: The U.S. is deepening ties with NATO and Arctic partners like Canada and Finland to build collective security and deterrence.
  • Focus on Domain Awareness: A key goal is to improve monitoring and understanding of activities in the High North to prevent miscalculation and respond to threats.

I chose to use the term "ARctic" rather than Greenland for pretty obvious reasons.

Golden Dome may help at least a limited nuclear attack and perhaps more. That is our weakness and in a nuclear war simulation we get mushroomed clouded very good as compared to many other areas of the planet.

Well then explain to me why getting Greenland our National Security would benefit, especially considering that getting it, would cause NATO to turn against us, thus causing our established security base to desert us?

Explain that to me, please!

How is getting Greenland (look at the map) going to help our security?
It puts us a lot closer to western Russia where the bulk of the population, military and Russian weapons.

Rather than buying the 836,000 square miles of Greenland, I would prefer to see an offer to purchase 1,954 square miles of Mexico, a one-mile swath along the stretch of our southern border.

Trump saw Greenland on a map and it looks big to him, so he wants it.

He had heard that Thomas Jefferson added the Louisiana Purchase to the United States, and is highly regarded.

Poor old Mucky .
Fooled again by Trumpfy .

Should we start to call Mucky , Chumpfy ?
Do you ever get anything right , Chumpfy ?

Trump fears a yooj snowball fight.

“Who the hell wants to defend a license agreement or lease, which is a large piece of ice in the middle of the ocean, where, if there is a war, much of the action will take place on that piece of ice,” Trump mused. “Think of it, those missiles would be flying right over the center of that piece of ice.”
At one point during his extended riff, Trump mistakenly referred to Greenland as Iceland multiple times.
“Our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland,” Trump said. “So Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money.”
Icelanders are investigating who leaked their existence to Trump.

It's a matter of give and take to him though. He thinks he returned Alaska to Russia:
