What is driving this trade war?

PSST!!! The problems you had 40 years ago with unfair trade practices, don't exist today, with all of the trade deals make over the years.

Everything Trump does is all about life in the USA in the 1980's. This is the 21st Century. Time to get with the times.

No, our govt leaders screwed this country. Both parties and they continue to do so. Damn them.

Which American brands do European's like? Honda and Toyota or Ford and GM?

Tariffs is only one reason. Remove them and Europe still won't be buying our cars.

Europeans are not generally drawn to American cars, with some exceptions like Teslas. Several factors contribute to this, including the size and fuel consumption of many American vehicles, which can be problematic in Europe's narrower streets and higher fuel prices.

Europeans often don't buy American cars because of factors like higher fuel prices, a preference for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and the fact that American cars are often designed for larger roads and parking spaces, which don't always suit European cities.

European regulations regarding emissions and safety standards can be more stringent than those in the US, which can make it difficult for American car manufacturers to meet these requirements.

The cost of importing American cars into Europe can significantly increase the price, making them less competitive with locally produced vehicles.

So the 10% tariff is ONE reason. Guess what? They still won't be buying our cars. So what did you win?

This beef really ain't with europe.

I'm guilty of voting for dems and repubs in the past who have caused this mess.
What mess? What do you do for a living where China hurts you? I happen to buy cheap shit from China and I sell stuff to Mexico and Canada. What's the problem?

The problem is that it's hurting uneducated blue collar workers. There are a lot easier ways to fix their lives. How about Trump and Elon do what Ford did? Remember Ford paid $5 hr to his workers

In 1914, when Ford Motor Company implemented the "$5 a day" wage, it represented a significant increase from the previous $2.34 per day.

Why doesn't Trump just tell American companies to do what Ford did?

That 10% is now built into the stock market that Progs are ironically concerned about. So incremental increases or negotiations we will see what happens. People expect perfection with many things. It does not exist. We are used to legislation that even if not good, does not change due to party agendas and politics. So now we have some varying of agendas which is seen as not good also from politics.

That simply isn't true...nearly every major trading partner, the US is on the losing end of the deficit measure...Including Canada....There's really only one reason for this, and that, to a layman like me, is that countries like yours want, and expect our markets to take everything you want to sell us, while placing barriers to our products...This sound fair to you?

Getting with the times, doesn't mean that we just let you continue to subsidize your industry on the backs of the American consumer, without you doing the same for us....We don't need to buy our friends.

You stopped being a manufacturing nation YEARS ago. Manufacturing is NOT COMING BACK. Just like the horse and buggy is NOT COMING BACK.

No economy can go backwards and survive. You take the lay of the land and look for your opportunities, but Trump keeps trying to go backwards. To the 1800's. To the 1980's. Anywhere but forward.

And no people which has embraced authoritarianism or dictatorship has ever thrived economically because of it.

Some of this manufacturing has to come back, especially things related to national security, like Pharma for instance…NO WAY an adversary like China should be controlling that.

It’s real simple for our allies, open your markets to American goods, like we do for yours, or pay…Period.

We’ll worry about ramping up our manufacturing base…

China does NOT control your pharmceuticals. Only 7% of your pharma imports come from China. Stop believing the shit Trump tells you.

World markets are open to American goods, but African and Asian third world countries cannot afford high end American consumer goods, and they're not ever going to be buying them.

One of the shining moments of this whole mess was when Trump asked, "who signed these awful deals?", referring to deals he himself had signed.

We've become a terribly unserious country at a terribly dangerous time.
What a way to win China over to force the owner's of tik tok to sell. Or if they help will lower the tariff's.

His personal need for revenge is putting us in far more danger than any benefits we get from "winning" this:

China’s $1.9 trillion retaliation looms as Trump’s trade war heats up
We're not going to win this. No way, no how. We're dealing with a mentally deficient sociopath who will blow this whole thing up rather than admit that he fucked up. There isn't an economist in this country predicting that this will end up a win for this country. We can ignore the bullshit coming from his W.H. patsies. They're just concerned with keeping their cushy jobs, so fuck them. The whole lot of them.

The motherfucker is a legend in his own mind.
