What is driving this trade war?

To make this post more understandable and so people can understand the scale.
The GM/Saturn plant in SpringHill TN can manufacture 9,000 vehicles per hour. All colors and features according to the specific orders from the dealers. All with histories of their build, testing, and completion and performance diaries ready for their records of their future. And That is just one plant of several they have.

So....let's not get really excited about this.

His personal need for revenge is putting us in far more danger than any benefits we get from "winning" this:

China’s $1.9 trillion retaliation looms as Trump’s trade war heats up
You raise good points here and you are absolutely right about his petty, toddler-like need for revenge.
Here are the few moments at that 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner that caused The Donald to vow revenge on Barack Obama and run for office so that he could attempt to "erase" Obama's legacy and undo all the important progress Obama had made for our country.
The annual WCD is all about a bit of good natured "roasting" in the speeches, but Trump couldn't take it. He is too thin-skinned.
What a STUPID, petty, tiny man Trump is!

We buy from China because they sell us things cheap. Why should China buy from us?

Imagine if we sold things to another country because we sold them "cheap". And then one day they said "sorry, in order for us to buy from you, you have to buy just as much shit from us as we buy from you".

Would we buy their shit? No. Because their shit is expensive. It's why they buy from us.
You’re talking some serious shit there.

It all comes down to optics...if Trump could conceivably sell the trade war as us having a surplus with China, he’d be doing it saying he conquered them. Since he can’t do that and there is no wiggle room to claim that there is, he has to go to the other extreme--all out war.

You remind me of Samuel L Jackson in Django Unchained.

Didn't know Tumbling Twat couldn't answer for him/herself. Or did he/she, and forgot which sock they were on, lololololol.

CONCLUSION-----------> Tumbling Twat = Bobo da Leftist hobo. We are now reasonably sure of this.

QUESTION---------->If you start identifying which sock belongs to another, is that doxing, lolololol!

That is all short sided.
Americans will be cheering the shit out of this man if Trump gets the EU to agree to zero tariffs, which looks like it is going to happen, and forces China to comply with international law and stop stealing from us. This will send the markets to 50,000.
100%.
Democrats couldn't get elected as a dog catcher if that happens. And you guys will be remembered as the party that fought it all the way.
If if's and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a merry Christmas.

What will happen if the EU drops any and all tariffs?

And getting China to comply with international law is like trying to get Russia to end the war or get Israel and Palestinians to agree. Good luck with that.

How will you know when China starts their compliance with international law?

You have any idea how much Europeans loved American cars???
BEFORE their governments slapped tariffs/VAT and every regulation you can think of that forced us out of their markets????
Reopening the possibility of Europe to American cars?? You don't think that is important??
And you are a union man?

What is the one (1) consistent common denominator in virtually ALL of Trump's relationships? The ONE thing he will ALWAYS complain about?

It's about how he is "treated". If he feels he has not been "treated" well enough, he gets angry and acts out. This is something that is happening in his head alone. He is the one who decides on the spot if he's being "treated" well enough. If not, here we go.

So in this case, he has obviously felt for decades that he has somehow been taken advantage of by other countries. That they're getting the better of him somehow. So now he's responding in the only way he knows: He's attacking without looking at a bigger picture. He attacks, sees that the results are bad, and then changes course.

I know that Trump's fans think that they'll see a clear, tangible and material difference in their lives once Trump has exacted his revenge on all those countries. The sad thing here is, on balance, they will not. There are larger issues that influence the vector of an economy.

My goodness. You really have no idea of how bad the CCP is. You rage on about orange man bad but are completely ignorant of how the CCP has been manipulating currencies and countries for the past 25-30 years. Why don't you travel to Africa to see what they're doing to state and local govts. You really don't what you're talking about.

Are you one of the dipshits who voted for Trumpflation and recession?

One of the shining moments of this whole mess was when Trump asked, "who signed these awful deals?", referring to deals he himself had signed.

We've become a terribly unserious country at a terribly dangerous time.
It has deteriorated to the point where we actually have World Economic Forum apparatchiks posing online as independents and moderates.

Which American brands do European's like? Honda and Toyota or Ford and GM?

Tariffs is only one reason. Remove them and Europe still won't be buying our cars.

Europeans are not generally drawn to American cars, with some exceptions like Teslas. Several factors contribute to this, including the size and fuel consumption of many American vehicles, which can be problematic in Europe's narrower streets and higher fuel prices.

Europeans often don't buy American cars because of factors like higher fuel prices, a preference for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and the fact that American cars are often designed for larger roads and parking spaces, which don't always suit European cities.

European regulations regarding emissions and safety standards can be more stringent than those in the US, which can make it difficult for American car manufacturers to meet these requirements.

The cost of importing American cars into Europe can significantly increase the price, making them less competitive with locally produced vehicles.

So the 10% tariff is ONE reason. Guess what? They still won't be buying our cars. So what did you win?

Trump was complaining about the US being treated unfairly when it comes to trade nearly 40 yrs ago .. take 5 min to educate yourself ..

It's "short sighted", which is clearly what you are.

Trump is NOT going to get the EU to agree to American made Frankenfood, and cars fossil fuel cars. They're not buying it. If you want customers to buy your goods, your goods have to conform to their laws and their standards.

For generations, the US government has set regulations for US automakers which which keep their vehicles from being marketable to the rest of the world. It would cost too much to produce them. Well, the result is that the rest of the world doesn't want your gas guzzling SUV'S and trucks. You broke it, you own it. The Europeans have nothing to do with it.

PSST!!! The problems you had 40 years ago with unfair trade practices, don't exist today, with all of the trade deals make over the years.

Everything Trump does is all about life in the USA in the 1980's. This is the 21st Century. Time to get with the times.

I say it over and over:

There is the problem, and then there is THE WAY you ADDRESS the problem.

The mindless, caveman, heavy-handed approach rarely works. Especially when you're dealing globally.

But they just don't get it.

No I'm not making up the numbers. I saw a news piece on a tunnel they found. I think it was on Pablo Escobar or El Guapo.

The drug lords dug tunnels before Trump, during Trump 1.0, during Biden and they are digging them now under Trump 2.0. In fact right now there is a tunnel and millions of dollars of cocaine is going through it. Literally as we speak.
I bet we have the technology to discover those tunnels ss fast as they can dig them
