It happened to planes I was on twice, a few years apart, both on day time American flights from Charlotte to Cleveland. They explained it both times as too gusty to actually land and they had to go back up. Really, really freaky.

Not a pilot ...

Landing an airplane is a skill that quickly extinguishes ... if you don't any for a few weeks, you'll lose your touch ... so pilots will perform "touch and goes" for practice ... it's a GREAT opportunity for non-pilots to get passenger time ...

Everything is the same for landing, except once down instead of putting on the brakes, the pilot guns the engine and takes-off again ... flies around and lands again ... only to gun the engine and take-off ... for practice ...
