What if you saw society as a religion in itself?

I've been pondering this for a while. Think of a person who goes to church regularly and, naturally, all of his friends are also a part of that church and they subscribe to it's moral teachings. This ain't a good example since most of American society is heavily influenced by Christianity so this wouldn't be a good example. LEts try Islam since it would it would be easier to talk about.

We know we are in a society and people go to a mosque. The people who go to the mosque are a part of the koran's teachings and pretty much judge each other by how they live up to Islam's teachings. What if we thought of society as a kind of religion in itself? Wouldn't we judge each other by what that society values and hold as virtious by that society's standards? I'm not talking about putting people in prison for breaking laws but the right to condemn someone's soul based on how well they did in upholding society's values.

Would you think this is weird?
