What does a horse think about winning the Triple Crown?

It was awesome to see American Pharoah win at Belmont but I couldn't help wondering what the heck does the horse think about all the fuss? Does a horse have competitiveness like a human athlete or is just responding to his rider? Are they smart enough to realize there is something "special" happening? Do they even know it's a good thing to be ahead of the other horses at the end? What do you think?
