The wild things Americans do makes it increasingly difficult to rely on them, or even take them seriously as other than another threat. What perplexes many observers is that, while Americans may not feel they have much reason to like Europe, they have no reason to dislike it.

Speaking just for myself, I'm mildly hopeful after Biden won.

That's because I like the idea of the "Western World", that our countries on both sides of the Atlantic are partners who share the same basic values, such as the belief in freedom and republican/democratic government -- that our leaders are determined in free elections, that there are checks and balances in government, that the government is not above the law, that there are independent courts, that minority rights are protected.

It's these values that make us different from other countries, and, dare I say that, make us better than other countries. And as we share these values, we are supposed to be natural partners and support each other against threats by tyrants. That was the policy of all American Presidents since 1945, until 2016.

My impression was that Trump gave up this basic idea, the idea that America is "leader of the free World". For him, there is no such thing as "the West". He doesn't care if other countries are free or tyrannies. He became best buddies with tyrants like Russia's Putin, who orders regime critics to be poisoned or shot on the streets, who oppresses freedom of speech and denies fair elections, but he treated his free, republican European allies like enemies. All Trump cares for is his fanbase at home, and he regularly called democratic foreign leaders names just to please his fanbase.

Although I understand where Trump is coming from, regarding some of his policies (like that Germany should pay more for NATO, or that unlimited illegal immigration is not a good thing), my impression is that in his attempt to be nationalistic, he threw "the West" under the bus. But I believe cooperation is in all our interest, because there are certain problems none of our countries can solve on its own, or at least could be solved much more easily if we cooperated.

Also, Trump appeared to endanger our values, the very values America and the West used to stand for, by telling weeks before the election he will only accept the result if he wins, and when he lost, he attempted a putsch, a coup d'etat by spewing lies about an alleged illegitimacy of the election, rather than accepting the will of the people, like some wannabe dictator of a broken banana republic, thus damaging one of the most important institutions of a free country. This, just like his friendship with autocratic tyrants like Putin, give me the impression Trump neither believes in American values, nor Western values, but is a populist demagogue of a kind like Putin, Lukashenko or Erdogan -- values and freedom don't matter for him, but his own power only.

I'm not amazed about Biden, but I think he will be at least a "normal" President, like the Presidents between 1945 and 2016: One who respects the values of freedom and republicanism, who believes the Western world should cooperate to preserve them, one who doesn't constantly praise himself and blames everybody else for his own shortcomings and if he'll be diselected in 4 years, he will not attempt to damage the trust in the institution of free elections, but accept the will of the people.
