What did our founders really mean when they said “general welfare”?

If you voted for Trump there’s a good chance you’re a lot like me with regard to why....I voted for him on two policies almost exclusively...First and foremost on how he would deal with illegal Mexicans and the border and second on how he would yank lowlifes off the Democrat induced welfare plantation.
Anyhoo, as we approach the point where welfare reform will be visited I ask for your opinions on EXACTLY what you think our founders meant when they used the phrase “GENERAL WELFARE” in the constitution?

Attention all Smartest Guys In The Room, and legal scholars:
Please spare us the case citations such as the U.S. vs Butler case and the like. I’m interested in YOUR opinions.
Our welfare clause is general because it must be comprehensive enough to provide a general solution for any contingency. FDR proved this is the Case in our federal republic; thank Goodness FDR was a left winger.

I have to laugh at you Progs, everyone of you thinks that the 10th is the SUPREME amendment that supersedes all of the rest of them. Your ignorance is palpable.
Not at all. That is just right wingers being clueless and Causeless. Our Tenth Amendment is supreme. You merely need to prove how any given policy does not promote and provide for the general welfare.

You do realize you just admitted what an idiot you are, right? Anyone who advocates that the 10th supersedes the rest of the Constitution is an uneducated dolt.

The "General Welfare" clause is not direction to turn the US into a Socialist Shithole.

General Welfare is direction to do what needs to be done.

The scope is determined by We the People
Negative
You keep forgetting that pesky word GENERAL is the key piece to the puzzle.
general means overall welfare.
Nothing says any legislation has to help everyone the same. Just help the country as a whole

It doesn’t need to...GENERAL means general...Think GENERAL population.

I am
Helping the general population means help the country as a whole
Now you’re starting to get it.
All taxation monies spent (general welfare) by Father Government must benefit the nation in GENERAL....the GENERAL population. It’s the only thing that makes any sense to a sane mind.

It has to be for the good of the country.
A small program or expenditure that helps a small portion of the country still benefits the country as a whole.

Give me a specific example that you object to and I will respond
I’ve asked you to show data that proves we benefit when Father Government forces us to pay/reward Guadalupe with a bonus each time she expands her forever growing litter of dependent parasites.
Can you do so now?

The Constitution also doesn't say a damn thing about giving Latasha and her nine illegimate pickinnies welfare either.

Says nothing about NASA either
Falls under science.
Where does the Constitution mention science?

The Constitution provides for a standing Navy but not a standing Army. Should we disband the Army and go back to State Milifias?
no retard the constitution does not prohibit a standing army it just requires it be funded a new every 2 years,God you really are clueless on the constitution.
There is a reason for that requirement.

That a well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state, therefore, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; that standing armies, in time of peace, should be avoided as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power.--Virginia State Constitution
so now you care what the founders said but not in regards the powers of the legislature?

These stupid Moon Bats hate what the Founding Fathers said about the right to keep and bear arms, don't they?

Only the unorganized militia as Individuals of the People who are not well regulated militia, complain about gun control laws.

The defense and protection of the state and of the United States is an obligation of all persons within the state. The legislature shall provide for the discharge of this obligation and for the maintenance and regulation of an organized militia.

How would that promote or provide for the general welfare, ceteris paribus?

Why should others pay for others healthcare?

Already happens everytime someone goes to the ER without insurance.

What's wrong with I buy mine and you buy yours?

Because making profit from the sickness and ilnesses of you and me is immoral.

Why do you believe these are functions of government? Why should government be able to force me to pay for your children?

Because we decided in the early 1900's, around the time FDR came into office, that taking care of our children is the way to have a future for our country. Sorry...no more child labor, General Lee.

Why would you want you and your fellow citizens to pay higher taxes?

Because I like the things my tax dollars pay for, and I want more of it.

Why would you believe that? $22 trillion has been spent on the "welfare" you speak of without any measurable improvement.

Because $22 trillion on wars in Asia and South America the last 60 years hasn't done anything for me, and $22 trillion on stuff in my own borders would probably help me.
When you stop supporting killing the unborn, then I might listen when you talk what's moral and immoral.
But you believe in neander-gate...

Just about NOBODY thinks of it that way.

If the general welfare meant what the left claims it means then there would have been no need to follow it with specific things Congress could do since the statement general welfare would have covered everything.
Such an interpretation gives the federal government unlimited power, and renders meaningless the reserves of power to states.

This is why we cannot let people like Dan run our nation. He wants to give too much power to government and make us all slaves.

He is a commie.
we have a general government and a general welfare clause; coincidence or conspiracy?

We have a constitution, a federal government and a 10th amendment that says what Madison said it meant. The powers of the federal government are few and limited.....Federalist 45......end of discussoin.

... What did our founders really mean when they said “general welfare”? ...

General welfare, I guess. To have a house, food, to have some money, to be educated, to be able to visit a library and a theatre or a public bath and to make a conversation with others about important or beautiful and nice things, to be able to travel and to visit friends ... and so on and so on ... a doctor for everyone is also important ...

Wow....you are a major fan of fairytales and fiction aren’t you?
Trust me, NOBODY sane could twist “promote the general welfare” into free homes and Cadillacs for all.

Nobody you know on the right wing? The left understand the concept. Our welfare clause general and must be able to come up with solutions to any given contingency, otherwise it would take a new amendment to our Constitution, even for an air force.

Yes, our welfare clause is General not common.

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises,

to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;

but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

What did our founders really mean when they said “general welfare”?

They meant that in 200 years, be prepared to need a massive entitlement fund to take care of the general walfare of a whole class of valueless people called Democrats who can't support themselves.
Only right wingers would take a Common defense clause and turn it into a general warfare clause; go figure.
