What Are Your Thoughts On Board Reputation Points?

My feelings are this, and I'm hoping this won't be taken the wrong way by admin, because I'm not "bitching", I'm just laying out my two cents open and honestly... "I think the 'you must spread some reputation around before giving it to XXXXXXX again' isn't right". It seems socialistic to me, like a "liberal" program. Like the liberal thinking that "there aren't any winners or losers". It's kind of a mandate forcing you to do what the BOARD wants you to do with your reputation power, not what YOU want to do.

Am I wrong?

I think the rep points function is an adjunct to keep the site a bit more active and if you could rep the same person over and over it would ruin the game.

Some have way too much and others not enough, back slapping or arse licking, it becomes lost in translation.Having said that, feel free to give me some.

I agree with pale pretty much on this..

I don't do much rep. So say I give dillo rep today, then over a months time maybe reps to two others, then dillo posts something else I wanna rep, I can't.
I give rep because the post is on target in the thread an makes a good point. I think that's what it's for. I don't wanna spread it if there is nothing to spread it to.. That's common too, I think.

What if someone only spends time on part of the board.
That makes for a lot less rep but also less members.

My 2 cents.

Exactly.I have on occasion searched for some worthy posts to rep just so I can rep someone in particular.

It's one of those things where the solution isn't great, but the problem is far worse. If there was no limit to repping, we might see some people just rep each other for every post to build up their rep power to horrible levels, then go blasting everybody they didn't like down into the negatives.

It would probably be better if people could accumulate points (as a dubious form of prestige) but if giving of points was equal. If everybody could give 5 points for example then you wouldn't have as much brown nosing and/or fear of giving neg rep to "powerful" people. Face it you're not going to neg rep someone with more points than you because that will be negated when they ding you. I don't give neg rep so I don't really care, but that seems like a more reasonable system. The bigshots would still have a lot of points to show for their tenure and quality of their posts.

sounds a bit like a Democrat's view on money. Dems often think those with money should re-distribute that money to those w/o. If people want high rep scores, and what comes with those - they need to post better stuff. :)

I have to agree. I don't have as many points, but way more posts. To accumulate both is a lot of work, doesn't matter if it was a 'labor of love' or not. In any case, we've earned both the rep and the 'power' of dinging and repping. I don't know how much, if any you ding. I do, but not nearly as much as I give positive.

One of the most vocal about my 'dinging' has been on the positive side, so much more-keeping in mind that the dings are at 1/2 power.

Rep points come from the number of times you post and the frequency and rep power of those who rep you, correct (minus the times you get dinged and who dings you of course)?

Ya know, at this point I don't know where they come from. I took off nearly 6 months, not gaining posts for sure. I know it has to do with total posts, but I read alot and am fast, so I've got that covered. On the other hand, it has to do with rep, I think I get less than many, perhaps because most don't agree with me, or think a few points won't matter. :dunno:

In any case, those that rep me have zippo to do with those I rep. My criteria is I try to catch newbies that are positive. I try to catch the regs that i agree with.

As for dinging, usually it's for over the top anti-Americanism, or to get back at those that ding me.

Wierd---I was warned that using rep as a means of retaliation was a no no. Whodda figgered??

Go for it. You do keep track of 'total points?' I mean, those who ding and rep ya? Wanna count?

For the most part, I'm pretty generous with giving out rep. I think I've repped just about all the regs at least once. Some many times.

But like Mr. T added, sometimes I want to be able to rep the same person simply because they deserve it, or I agree with them, but sometimes I can't because I haven't spread enough rep around. Well I didn't spread any around because I hadn't seen anything worth it. That's the problem I see.

I do think it's fun though. And yes, I do ding people, and I've dinged people in retaliation to them dinging me. Why not?

Mainly because retaliation isn't the intended use of neg rep.

*In general comments*

If you were allowed to rep whoever you wanted whenever you wanted all that would happen is 3-4 people would rep each other for every other post AND I would almost guarantee that certain members would be neg repped for every post they make about certain hot topics.

It might be worth a try if there was a way for someone to parent those who lack the responsibility to use the rep system appropriately, but seems like a lot of work for something so inconsequential as rep.
