No, that pretty much hits the nail on the head. From a legal standpoint, the Republican Party should never have allowed a lifelong criminal like Donald Trump, to run for office. But they thought that if they surrounded him with good people, they could "manage" his worst impulses.
The mistake that Republicans made was not impeaching him in 2020, but waiting for the voters to weigh in wasn't altogether unreasonable, but after January 6th, the Republican failure to impeach Trump and bar him from public office for life, has been the nation's undoing.
Even worse, right wing media continued to promote the idea the 2020 election was "stolen" and Republicans introduced more than 400 laws to ensure "election security", even though Trump's own staffers at Homeland Security, the FBI, and the DOJ all declared it the most fair and honest election in US history.
Nothing was done to ensure that the American people were told the truth, and Trump was allowed to continue lying about the election, as Republicans who refused to impeach Trump and told Democrats to take it to the Courts, then participated in blocking criminal prosecution of Trump and his staffers.
So now you have a twice impeached, convicted felon, and adjudicated rapist running your country. That doesn't seem to be working out well for you.
