Glad to hear your are starting out as a responsible gun owner. Training, practice, practice and more practice. Also critically important to keep your firearms secure. I second what others have recommended about shotguns for HOME defense. Easy to use and easy to learn. Pistols are hard to shoot and require a great deal of training and practice. A .22 pistol makes for great affordable training so you don't go broke training with your PDW. It doesn't matter what you buy if you can't hit the target. Another plus for the shotgun vs. a semiautomatic rifle.

Be safe and please take this very seriously. Mistakes in handling firearms can be lethal. Shooting is the only sport I know of where you can never make a mistake. Handle every firearm as if it is loaded. Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target. Take your finger off the trigger before you take the sights off the target. Don't mean to nag but I want you to be safe.

Did I mention a shotgun was a better idea than a semiautomatic rifle?

The average person has basically no chance in their lifetime of ever using a gun in self-defense. There is a far greater possibility of the gun being stolen and used in a crime or a family member using the the gun against themselves or an innocent person.

Yet people will continue to buy guns, load them, put them in their closet only to find that years later a child or other family member kills themselves or others with it. That has happened in my family and I tell you, you will never get over it. It is not worth the risk.

I may regret the decision because of the money spent. I will NOT regret it for the piece of mind.

You people opened a can of worms, you really have. They protested in a city 10mls from my wife and I on Tuesday. At 9pm, the Taco Bell burned to the ground, and 2 other businesses were lit on fire. That is when my wife said, "ENOUGH!" I agree! If you don't get it, to bad, so sad. YOU did this! And if you ever think the American people are going to let you mess with the 2nd amendment now, you are only fooling yourselves.

Some protesting has been going on less than 2 miles from here, but as far as I know, no business's have been attacked or that I've seen the last time I went out & about a couple of days ago. The longer this goes on, the more likely it will happen. People everywhere and on both sides have had enough and is only a matter of time before it escalates to all out mayhem. Ok then here is a personal look at a few things I have.

It largely depends on what feels good to you and that you can shoot well and control. I've had several handguns and here are four of mine.

Springfield Armory XDS .45 caliber pistol. It's very concealable, has a grip safety unlike a Glock, plus it has a very obvious loaded chamber indicator. And last but not least the front sight is a night sight that glows in the dark. It will have more recoil than a 9mm, but a 45 packs a lot more punch than a 9mm does especially in a short barreled gun. It has no external safety as it employs a trigger much like the Glock safe action trigger. It also has an ambidextrous mag release. Sells for around 500 dollars with two mags. One round in the chamber and 6 in the mag. I carry it in the warmer times.

This one is a Desert Eagle 1911 G with a 5 inch barrel in .45 caliber, and a grip safety and an external safety. It comes with 2 - 8 round magazines, nice grips and has the best trigger pull of any 1911 I have ever tried. It is also the most accurate pistol I have ever owned. They sell for about 800.00. I mainly carry in it winter months as it is harder to conceal. 1 round in the chamber and 8 in the mag, although I do have a ten round mag.

This one is a Ruger SP 101 .357 magnum 5 shot revolver with a 2 and a quarter inch barrel. The hammerless style fits in your pocket and won't snag on your pants when pulled out. It is very concealable. You can also shoot .38 special ammo if the .357 recoil is uncomfortable for you. It is double action only which means you cannot cock the hammer. I changed the grips to make the recoil more manageable to these:

The Ruger sells for around 600.00

Lastly I have this which I rarely carry anywhere because I don't have a holster for it.

It is a Rossi .357 magnum six shot double action revolver, with a four inch barrel. Based on the Smith and Wesson design, it is very accurate and has a great single action trigger pull. You can shoot .38 special in it too. Sells for around 350 dollars.

All of these guns have proven to be 100 percent reliable.

I would recommend you go to a range that will let you rent guns and try out several, or maybe hook up with a friend who has a few.

While I tend to be a Sig guy the Springfield line of XD’s are my current favorites to carry. I carry the .40 single or double stack depending on what I’m wearing. Highly recommended

Just tools that I hope I don't have to use for real now, though I go to the range fairly often just to keep up my skills and because I enjoy shooting. Actually go more now that I am retired than when I worked or was in Army/Guard. Went today.

Outside of the safe, single-action hammer guns (1911s for me) are condition 1, hammer back, thumb safety on. No racking slides to give bad guys an aiming spot and time to shoot. Striker or hammerless are stored ready to shoot.

In the safe, I don't keep one in the chamber. If I have to get a gun out of the safe it isn't an emergency or, even if it is, the whole operation is slow enough that the seconds to rack a slide doesn't matter.

Then again, I also have revolvers ready in and out of the safe. Nothing to do but point and shoot.

My friends; with the Left rioting, looting, and trying to get rid of the police, even my wife who has been anti-gun since we have been married, has now agreed that we should purchase firearms. We live in a very nice sub-division, and my wife spoke to our local police chief about this last week. He also suggested that we purchase firearms, as we must protect ourselves if they can not get here on time should something happen in the current conditions. He also gave her a card for some group that if you join, they will give free legal protection, should you have to protect yourself, or your property, and use your firearm in the process. I told my wife, we will buy 3 of them. 2 pistols, and a semi automatic rifle of some sort.

Thank you Leftists, you have just propped up the gun lobby for years to come. I could never have seen my wife agreeing to have firearms in our home, but your idiocy has convinced her, not to mention that most of our neighbors told her they too had firearms.

I am going to have to take a class, as is my wife, to learn the ins and outs of when we can use them. But let me tell you all------------>when it is legal to open fire on these thugs, I WILL!

You opened a thread to announce to many people in this forum that don't even care, that you're buying firearms out of ignorance and fear. Wonderful. As far as pistols, double action revolver with hammer on empty chamber. 5 shots if it's a decent caliber. You have to make them count. Luckily this gun I have is a shooter! You have to aim low, but I was knocking a golf ball around with it.
Hit it like 7x until it rolled over a berm out of sight. That's just a pistol, I'd do much better with my .22s and Mauser that I've had forever.
