Lots of talk about premium increases if republicans refuse to extend subsidies. Many seem to think the increases won't be much of a problem, and the subsidies are just there to fund healthcare for illegals anyway. November 1 is the start of signup time, and each individual will see their personal cost of not extending the subsidies. I suspect one side or the other will regret the stance they have taken on the subject..

I suspect politicians on both sides will regret this move.

Folks on the left will blame the right for the shutdown, and folks on the right will just blame the left.

Come November, the states will not be issuing SNAP payments, that is another 42 million people.

"Some 42 million Americans collect SNAP benefits, which are paid monthly onto electronic benefit transfer cards. But if the government doesn't reopen soon, these cards will not be loaded. . . . "

It makes little difference which political party these folks like, they will all feel the pain for the foolish way our government has been spending and destroying the nation for the past several decades.

Eventually, all of that will ripple through the economy, and very well might send us either into a depression, or unravel the entire economy and the nation. Its probably been the plan of the technocratic elites that fund both parties to destroy voters faith in government and political parties so they can transition the nation to be run by AI.

Honestly, it sort of shocks me that this isn't the most discussed issue on this site right now. The establishment is doing a terrific job at distracting the nation with other stuff.

Looks like 20 million folks will either have their rates go up significantly, or will just go w/o medical care.

"As the federal government nears a shutdown, a central issue in the government funding fight is health care costs. Premium tax credits (PTCs) help lower the cost of comprehensive insurance coverage for more than 20 million people who buy health insurance on their own through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces. However, the enhanced level of financial support that has been in place since 2021 will expire at the end of this year, and Congress passed up multiple opportunities to extend it as part of the Big Beautiful Bill signed into law in July. Unless Congress approves legislation on the enhanced subsidies, millions of Americans will face higher costs as a result. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects that about 4 million more Americans will be uninsured by 2034 if enhanced PTCs are not renewed. . . "

Obamacare isn't even a part of the discussion at this point. Democrats have voted to shut down the government. That is what is preventing all legislative policy decisions.

Technically, that isn't correct.

". . .The tax credits are at the heart of the federal government shutdown, in its third week with no end in sight. Democrats have demanded the subsidies be extended as part of any funding deal they sign, while Republicans say they’ll only negotiate on the issue once the government is funded.

With Congress deadlocked and the open enrollment period for ACA plans approaching on Nov. 1 in most states, Americans like Monreal are left to navigate the unknown. . . "

Yes, the subsidies are a large part of the discussion. Democrats agreed to pass the legislation when subsidies are extended. You didn't know that?

Democrats refused to vote for a CLEAN CR. That's the bottom line. What they're doing is like if the Republicans would have voted no to Biden's CR unless Democrats appropriated money to finish the border wall and secure our border. What Democrats are doing is 100% politics, not government. Democrats are destroying people's lives by pulling this bullshit

This is a CR not an appropriations negotiation.
Agreed. Those subsidies were created during the pandemic and given an expiration date. . . the end of this year.

The entire budget needs to be redone. We need to close every foreign military base and stop funding the wars in Europe and the Middle East, or else we are doomed.

We should also probably just scrap the entire ACA and many of the social programs the poor depend on. And increase taxes on the top five percent before it is too late.

The subsidies that are part of the budget were implemented during the pandemic, and have been extended with each CR.

. . . but they have an expiration date, the end of this year.

We are all doomed, regardless of party, if the spending is not put under some sort of control or austerity.

It won't matter whose fault the destruction of the nation and its economy are, when millions are homeless and starving, and the violence starts.

And Republicans rightly said, Democrats are liars and you'll pass the clean CR first, then we'll discuss the fact that Obamacare, without subsidies, is 1000x worse than the insurance market before Obamacare was enacted.

If it is supposed to be affordable, then no subsidies are needed.

Well, holding the line on 1.3 trillion dollars of spending that gives free healthcare to illegal aliens seems like a good place to start cutting back.

The enhanced premium tax credits that have made coverage more affordable.....

That right there tells me that it was never "affordable" in the first place unless the taxpayer footed the bill for the "enhanced premiums" of those on it.

All it amounted to was backdoor socialized coverage which was the vile dem goal all along.

Just another in a long line of scams foisted upon the taxpayer under the guise of "covid relief".

Why the **** are we not talking about the Largest red flag in the history of the United States?

42 ******* million people are on some form of food substance.

That is how badly the Congress has fucked this country.
Giant retailers like Walmart and Kroger probably benefit more from that subsidy than the poor.

Either way, when that comes to an end, the affects will be felt throughout the entire economy, regardless of if you are poor or middle class and don't even use those.

I agree. However, if someone doesn't blink, we all go down on that sinking ship together.

This issue should be the focus of forum conversation IMO though.

Talking about beef subsidies to a foreign nation is tangentially related, but being distracted by a ballroom while this is going on is nuts IMO.

Health insurance cost is a direct function of costs. If everyone drove a 3-million-dollar car, imagine what the insurance would cost. We supposedly live in a capitalist economy, supply and demand, and services and goods are determined by market price, but that may not apply in health care. Do you know how much your insurance pays for treatment? I think you would be shocked to know what medicare and medicaid pays doctors and prescriptions. This is what happens when the AMA owns Congress, but for the life of me I don't know how to address it. This is what medicare (tax money) reimbursed my dermatologist for just using a skin graft the size of a postage stamp on a wound he excised for a skin cancer. Just the patch, the procedure and tests were other charges, not cheap either. I don't fault the doctor, he is playing by the rules, but we can't have it both ways: a free economy and competitive pricing.
