The problem is that people are contagious before they become symptomatic. So they go a few days later from the casino or church to the grocery store where they mix with people who are taking sensible precautions and may be themselves or have family members in their household who are at a higher risk of severe infection. No one has a right to deliberately put others at risk for the sake of their slots or Jesus fix. Grow up!

Like i said.....what we see on this thread are a lot of confused and stupid people who really believe that they have the right to congregate in large groups irregardless of the consequences....irregardless of the scientific reports on the chinese virus and what it is capable of.

The only thing that might wake these folks up is if a bunch of them come down with the virus....then when they start dying I am sure they will see things differently.

No, it was government that provoked this fight, by illegally using a manufactured crisis as an excuse to blatantly violate the Constitution.

The government set a reasonable and lawful restriction, and the church deliberately violated it for their own sense of self-righteousness and desire to feel like a "persecuted minority". I'm neither impressed nor sympathetic.

Whether you believe that government's actions in this case were legal or reasonable or not, the fact remains that it was government, and not this church, that provoked this fight. It was government that tried to shut down this church, and it is government which arrested this pastor for attempting to exercise the rights which the First Amendment explicitly protects, and which the First Amendment explicitly forbids government from violating.

There is nothing anywhere in the Constitution, that even hints at any legitimate power on the part of any portion of government, to cook up a fake crisis such as this, and then use that fake crisis as an excuse to trash the Constitution or any part of it. There is no reason to suppose that the great men who wrote the Constitution would have ever thought of allowing any such thing; indeed, they were certainly aware of the possibility of the sort of abuses we are now seeing, and would have been quite wary of this possibility. It is too bad they didn't think to include provisions in the Constitution specifically calling for severe criminal charges and severe punishments for any corrupt public servant who had any willing part in any such abuses. Perhaps that's what Jefferson was thinking of when he wrote about the need of the Tree of Liberty to be watered regularly.

Once government seizes any power, it does not easily give it up again.

Now, that IS true, and I would not for the world discourage eternal vigilance on this subject or this debate on the topic. For all that I very much disagree with what this church did and with the people defending them, I would be deeply troubled if no one was debating this at all and everyone was just sanguinely accepting the pastor's arrest with no discussion at all.

And yet, you're being awfully careless and casual in defending this instance of government seizing power that no rational person would ever accept as legitimate for them to seize.

If we let government get away with this,then what is to stop them from seizing even more power, either based on this “crisis”, or on some new “crisis” also manufactured for this purpose?
