Exactly. The earth could well be billions of years old. Verse 2 simply says that the earth became a chaotic wasteland sometime after the original perfect creation. The garden of Eden was a restored remnant of the original creation which likely disappeared after Adam and Eve were expelled from it.

The earth was created originally as a "pleasure garden" (Hebrew Eden) for the angels, perhaps billions of years ago. They rebelled and the earth was trashed, probably by God in his anger. Many 'ruin/restoration' cycles later the earth was restored as a habitat for modern man.

Hebrew keywords in the Genesis account should be studied carefully to understand this.
