What I was thinking was that Comey kept a copy and stored it off site at the time he wrote the memo, and the others he apparently wrote as well. He didn't have to mention anything classified in his memo to self.

You don't know shit....his "office files" are ALL of a classified nature and you can't take them home. My brother-in-law used to service copy machines at Langley. They came to his door at midnight and took him back for 4 hours of interrogation because he'd inadvertently stuck a classified document into his case that had been stuck in the copier prior to his service call. He had to account for every minute from the time he left Langley until they knocked on his door.
