Just because you can walk to and from Starbucks, doesn't mean you aren't disabled. I have a friend who is on a disability pension, and she can walk to Starbucks and back. But her hips were shattered in a car accident. They're held together by what looks like a piece of chain link in her X-rays. She can't lift anything over 20 lbs., or do manual labour. She was a welder and worked in construction before the accident.

If the disabled vet has PTSD, they may be able to walk anywhere they want, but may not be able to focus, concentrate, or work well with others.

Being disabled doesn't mean you're flat on your back, or in a wheelchair and can't move. It means you're unable to do a normal day's work or hold a job.

You don't claim 100% disability, it is awarded by VA based on medical evaluations. Not all medical problems are apparent at first glance.
