From restaurants hosting federal lobbyists to world-class cultural centers, the city's fortunes have long been tied to the government employees who operate the machinery of the state.

Now, more than three years after the Covid-19 pandemic forced the United States government to rely on telework, long-term remote work is having painful consequences for the local economy.

Washington's workers are coming into the office less than half what they were before the pandemic, according to Kastle, which manages entry badges for 40,000 companies across the country.

"The DC office market is dying," Chris LeBarton, director of market analytics at the real estate data company CoStar told AFP in an interview at the company’s offices downtown.

"If you can't get the federal government back to Washington, DC, even at three days a week, good luck," he said.

Hey, all those vacant office spaces should be used to house illegal immigrants or they can cut a deal with Blackrock to turn them into apartments.

Yep. Experts did such a great job scaring people to such a degree that they don't want to return, touch others, walk around without masks etc. The same people who mocked me and wished for my death for not being vaxxed are now too afraid to even go outside.

Companies figured out that they could still get their work done with people from home and their costs are less. Things change.

I don't believe anyone has argued it's for everyone, every business, everywhere.
IIRC, didn't a significant number of Twitter employees try to sue Elon for demanding they return to the office? As for DC, I couldn't possibly care less about any suffering those drones may do. I'm sure all of that and more is well-deserved.

Washington is such a miserable city to afford and move around in.

No one would go there if they did not have to go.

And think if all the carbon emissions not going into the air cuz they are staying at home, just another piece of evidence they don't really believe their own crap.

To be honest 87% of the .gov workers could work from elsewhere in the country instead of trying to force 10 pounds of shit into the five pound bag of shit that is DC.
