It's unclear if NY taxpayers would supply the heroin or if the addicts would furnish their own drugs but the state would furnish clean needles and standby medical help. It's probably true that taxpayer funded medics and needles would probably cut down on heroin addict deaths but at what cost and what side effects? First of all a safe zone for IV drug users would most likely increase the demand for heroin and with the demand the price goes up and when the price goes up the crime rate goes way up. What happens when a college kid wants to experiment with IV drugs and the state furnishes a safe environment to get high? You get another middle class kid with a drug habit.

What are the costs for overdose deaths and healthcare for needle transmitted diseases. I'd argue its a fraction of what the needles cost.

Yeah, but prison satisfies the conservative authoritarian streak. And placates their innate desire to make others suffer.

Superficially, I know that sounds harsh. But conservatives really do believe in edification through agony. They want poverty to hurt. They argue that one of the reasons so many are in poverty is that we've made it too comfortable. And if it hurt more, if the poor suffered more, that they'd be motivated to not be poor anymore. Or as a conservative would put it, to 'make better choices'. Same with prison. Its not a deterrent unless its agonizing. The more torturous prison is, the better it works. As the more people will want to avoid it.

Needle exchanges don't involve suffering. It doesn't feed the conservative desire to obey and force obedience. And it sidesteps the rules, putting practicality and utility over the conservative conception of fairness and their desire to make people suffer more deeply and more completely.

So their initial reaction is one of dismay and disgust. Their second reaction is that it might actually work. And their third is it doesn't matter if it works.

What is the cost of college kids becoming addicted to I.V. drugs when the state offers a place to get high with all the supplies? You think it won't happen? The needles are cheap but there is no guarantee that the junkies won't get off somewhere else and use the place to make contacts. The support nurses and technicians could be better used in hospitals than sitting around watching degererate junkies roll their eyeballs when the shit hits what's left of their brains.

How many college kids? And of course, its not like the presence of supplies are going to significantly increase the odds of someone choosing heroin. Merely increase the odds that they won't catch a disease or won't overdose when they shoot up.

I don't believe addiction is a disease but I do see the value of rehab.

I'm coming at this from a strictly pragmatic point of view and after considering the options I believe legalization is the most prudent course
