Well, the entire region consists of mostly tightly controlled airspaces. New York Class B, Philadelphia Class B, Allentown Class C, there is a Military Operation Area to the south of NY and east of PA, etc.

Very little uncontrolled airspace in that region.

They have to move to and fro from where they loiter, and the only descriptions of loitering I have seen are around that golf course.

So maybe it is incompetence on the FAA's part, but it seems very unlikely to me.

Right but how can one make that size determination without actually having one? Visually estimating the size of an airborne object is impossible against an otherwise empty sky because one needs to know its distance.

If they are visible on radar then surely they can just follow them as they leave and head back to where they came from? see where they go. If they're electric they won't have a very long range.

They may be completely unrelated. There are several MOA's in the area, we are doing a lot of military testing of that sort. The entire eastern seaboard is an ADIZ and almost all of it is controlled special airport access airspace.

It is just such a heavily monitored airspace that it makes no sense to me that these drones are really as mysterious as the media presents them.

Yes but the spy balloons are at very high altitudes if they are working properly. There's a big difference between a spy balloon and a drone with very limited range, and operating at low altitudes.
