Trump is a bad joke. America is often a bad joke. That does not mean there is any serious comparison between America and Saudi Arabia, China, Russia or any number of other authoritarian atrocities. In many places, forces of order would have simply started shooting at the very start. Hundreds or more would already be dead. We will never know how many died at Tiananmen, and they weren't looting. We will never know how many Russian journalists were really victims of suicide. Women beheaded for trivialities are uncounted. That one man died in police custody is terrible, but it is light years from what the op infers. There is no excuse for simply taking advantage of a situation for destruction and theft. There is no excuse for racism. Both have to stop. America is defective. That is not exceptional; most countries and societies are defective. We can, nonetheless, distinguish between a nation where one can express any opinion at any time about anything, and nations where disagreeing with a book gets a death sentence.
