If Cohen really did something illegal it doesn't matter what you want to believe about the investigation. A federal judge felt there was enough to conduct raids on Cohen's properties, and now the DOJ is investigating. It's completely out of Mueller's hands now.

We don't know how early it is. Mueller referred the case to New York months ago, and it sometimes takes months to obtain a search warrant. First you need probable cause. Obviously this federal judge was provided enough evidence already to authorize the raids.

However Cohen paying off the porn star 11 days before the General Election is the problem and could possibly violate campaign finance laws which is a federal offense. Over $25,000 could be prosecuted as a felony with up to 5-years in prision.

That office conducted the and will be handling any prossecutions resulting from the finding that have to bank fraud, money laundering, mail fraud, and/or campaign finance law violations.
