Turkey will veto Sweden and Finland NATO membership.

After the U.S., the country of Turkey has the 2nd largest army of all the NATO members.

Even if Erdogan acts on behalf of his fellow totalitarian, NATO would still come to the defense of Finland and Sweden against further Russian aggression. They are already close partners with the alliance and take part in NATO drills, and Great Britain has formally committed to come to their aid.

May 11 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson signed declarations Wednesday assuring mutual security protections with Finland and Sweden one week ahead of their plans to apply to join NATO.
The declarations include protections against traditional and cyber attacks as the two Nordic countries face growing threats from nearby Russia.

Go google it yourself. Russia guaranteed that they would never attack Ukraine when they convinced Ukraine to give up it's nuclear weapons.
And at the same time the U.S. promised they wouldn't expand NATO membership to any more countries. Then proceeded over the next few years to allow several countries that bordered Russia to join NATO.

Who is Russia to say who can do what?

There is no downside to Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
Erdogan has the veto, but may not use it.
Maybe we can convince him a veto is a bad idea?
No downside really?

Obviously the only possible response to a war that was caused by NATO expansionism is to dramatically expand NATO.

CRAZY!

From the article:
"The Turkish leader justified the opposition by citing the alleged support of Sweden and other Scandinavian countries for Kurdish militants, whom the Turkish state considers terrorists, reports"
Thanks. Damn it just goes on and on.

Try keeping up.
Google "Budapest Memorandum", Russia, the US, and France signed it too.
We agreed to protect the Ukraine if they gave up their nukes. We lied...

Turkey shares the Black Sea and is a close trading partner with Russia, especially with oil and LNG products.
Erdogan does't see any benefit in antagonizing Putin by voting for Finland and Sweden to become members of NATO.
Yes, that's the reason and the only possible reason.

Turkey is America's loose cannon in Nato and that hasn't been a secret for several years.

This discussion is productive as in there being some different views being aired!

Don't forget the Ukraine's betrayal of the Minsk agreement and thir continous waging of war in the Donbass since 2014 and even before!

No, Russia never did intend to invade the Ukraine. Russia had to have known that it was getting into a losing proposition, but couldn't not finally take a stand.

And of course Russia acted with the confidence of their nuclear arsenal. Both from the POV that they wouldn't/couldn't be attacked by the US and also that the US couldn't ever defeat Russia.

Now the mutually agreed upon limitations are proving that out. If either America or Russia push the envelope on the agreed upon limitations, world war 3 will begin.

If the limitations are adhered to then nobody really knows how it will end. We can only know that Russia is never going to accept defeat.

Anybody still thinking that Nato is important now is engaged in wishful thinking!
