any alternative would have to begin at the local level and work its way up, co-opting one of the established parties to make is a viable alternative.

Going with a top down approach just splits the vote on one side and gives it to the outlier.

That said....at the local level everyone has a chance of winning. At the local level party means far less than it does higher up. At the local level elected officials do not have to toe the party line or risk being driven from the party, they can actually have ideas that cross party line.

But you would not know any of this as all you care about is the letter in front of the name.
