One of the countless interesting parts of this disaster is the fact that these people essentially had a choice: They could have said "yes, he's awful, he's lawless, he's a buffoon, he's everything you say he is, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and I'm just suspending all standards for him". That actually would have (potentially) made for an interesting conversation about the nature of what "desperate times" are, and ways to address them.

Instead, they've chosen to just deny and ignore and dismiss everything. It's all fake news. They've talked themselves into believing that he's just the opposite of what the rest of the country and world sees. They've just hidden themselves in their alternate reality and only they can get themselves out of it. I just don't know how to communicate with that.
