The same has been happening within evangelical Christianity in the USA, many of whom of course vote Republican. A very informative and also amusing text by Kristin Kobes Du Mez published in 2020 looks at the way the Christian Right/Nationalists have striven to replace the Jesus figures of the gospels with an all encompassing figure of rugged masculinity. Her text is entitled Jesus and John Wayne.
