Whether the Department of Education is a "good idea" or not, is irrelevant. Whether it's doing a good job or not is irrelevant. Whether it employs thousands of wonderful people or not is irrelevant.
The Federal government is a government of limited powers - limited by the Constitution itself. If the Constitution does not set forth a "power" for the Feds, then it is "...reserved to the States, respectively, and the people."
In the Leftist orgy of Federal programs, spending, and initiatives, this basic government structure has been lost in the fog.
It might be a good idea for the Feds to take over all incarceration in the country - take it away from the states, countries, and cities, so that it can be better and more consistently managed. BUT WE CAN'T DO IT because the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution forbids it.
"Good idea" is not sufficient.
