All I can say is that you definitely would not want the general public to elect them. We've already seen how this ruined the Senate.

Well, the Supreme Court seems to be just as bad.

I like the Swiss system. People vote for their representative, but the executive gets elected by their legislature in general (that has more political parties than the US), so to be on the 7 man executive, you have to have support of lots of different groups in parliament. So, you have to be sensible.
