Kind treatment would be to get them the help they need... not leaving them on the street to kill themselves or kill others... Drug and alcohol treatment is what they need... food and shelter as well....

The big problem with homelessness is the lack of affordable housing. Our Republican governor just canceled the motel voucher program and put 800 families back on the streets.

Getting rid of this program is definitely progress toward alleviating homelessness.

Throwing all of that money into supplying housing pushes housing out of the affordability range of other families not in the program. The old supply/demand curve. More money chasing the same amount of a good (in this case, housing) will push the prices up.

Simply, the shelters do not allow alcohol and drug use. I volunteered in a women's shelter in Seattle, and getting caught using alcohol and/or drugs was an immediate ticket out onto the street.

It was a luxurious program too -- provided everything a woman needed for two years to get her life together. I could not believe how many women got booted for substance use.

Because they had the choice of using.

Taking away the choice is the only way to get most of them clean.
