I've been advocating for this for years. Most of the homeless would be in some sort of mental institution or treatment center had we not shut most of them down 50 years ago. I understand the reason behind the closures, but that was the wrong approach. The abuse should have been dealt with by increasing oversight and adequate funding for these facilities. Closing them simply threw these people out onto the streets and now they live in squalor in tents and cardboard boxes in alley ways or right on the public sidewalks. They've destroyed entire urban neighborhoods.

Place them back in the institutions where they belong.

What institutions? They don't exist. The ones which do exist are already full or overcrowded.

Even in the blue states.

Many of these people, with the right medication, could get their head straight and function in normal society again. We also have to ensure they receive continued support upon discharge so they don't end up back in the same situation again.
