Many countries do require some sort of ID at the polling place. Not all, by any means.

The US is a republic (a point Trumpster love to repeat as a response to their facist assaults on democracy), and each state runs its own elections.

This is spelled out in the Constitution. GOP campaigns to try and assert Federal control of elections are unconstitutional. But the noise campaigns are popular with the sort of people who advocate these notions as a tool to repress turnout.

Many countries make voting a requirement too.

The GOP will NEVER support that.
