When Ad Hominem Arguments Can Be Legitimate

In informal logic, an ad hominem argument is generally considered a fallacy when it attacks a person’s character, motives, or irrelevant personal traits instead of addressing the substance of their claim Britannica+1. This is because such attacks divert attention from the topic and appeal to prejudice rather than reason.

However, ad hominem arguments are not always fallacious. They can be legitimate or rhetorically valid when the personal claims made about the arguer are logically relevant to the issue at hand and are properly justified Scribbr.

When They Are Legitimate

  1. Relevance to the topic – If the person’s character, past actions, or stated commitments are directly connected to the argument, the attack can be relevant. For example, questioning a witness’s credibility in court because they have a history of lying is not fallacious because it logically affects the trustworthiness of their testimony Britannica.
  2. Circumstantial ad hominem – If the arguer’s actions or statements are inconsistent with their claims, and this inconsistency undermines the argument, it can be a valid point. For instance, if someone claims to oppose smoking but smokes themselves, that inconsistency can weaken their argument uploads.teachablecdn.com.
  3. Abusive ad hominem – Direct personal insults may be legitimate in contexts where the audience is expected to judge the speaker’s character as part of evaluating their credibility, such as in political debates or public service roles The Fallacy Files.
  4. Guilt by association – If the person’s affiliation with a group known for making false or harmful claims is relevant to the issue, it can be a legitimate consideration fnl.mit.edu.

And nutjob definitely qualifies as a fact.

Uhhhh....

Did Obama repost these images glorifying himself as savior as Trump did?

So what exactly did Trump say? Did he say he was 'The Savior' or anything like that? Or are you just a bubble baby parroting what the other bubble babies are doing?

So now Vance, Johnson & Thune are all obediently falling in line with Trump, criticizing the freaking POPE for being for PEACE.

That's what MAGA has done to the GQP. Turns out there are a lot of phony Christians in that party.

I'm sure the history books will reflect what has happened here.

The Pope is an old commie front man. Nobody, not even most Catholics, pay any attention to the Popes any more. They are an embarrassment these days.

It's about time
Catholic charities were used during the Biden administration to flood the nation with illegal aliens

They also engaged in labor racketeering. One Catholic agency in California took bribes to steer Vietnamese refugees to labor racketeers in the meat packing business in the Midwest some time back. I doubt they ever fully quit that sideline.

I never said that it offended me very much. I was talking about other Christians that I've seen online, mainly to correct the wrong idea that it was "leftists" who were outraged. I mean, I think it was a stupid, bizarre and crazy thing to do. :dunno: But, nothing he does surprises me anymore. And since I never got on the Trump train in the first place, I wasn't "disappointed" in him. Why would I be, when I already think he is a fraud and a terrible person?

And I'm extremely glad that Kamala lost. It doesn't get much worse than her. Come on, you're smarter than that binary mindset that is so common around here.

But if you don't see why many Christians would see it as sacrilegious, then I don't know what to tell you. The more interesting question to me is.... why so many of you always have such an extremely strong need to defend Trump, no matter what he does? He was absolutely right when he said he could shoot someone in broad daylight on 5th Avenue, and wouldn't lose his loyalists' support. Why such devotion to a mere human being? No one deserves that type of devotion, except God.
I Agree with You Buttercup, but I also have to point out,..... "Christianity" in Today's World, has at least 30,000 Sects that have widely different beliefs, that Truly Conflict with "The Way" of The Scriptures.

Since the time of O'Bama, where "Gay Marriage" became a "Right", :huh1:& he threatened to take away the Tax Exempt Status of the "Churches" that refused to honor it,....I thought that Trump, having won a considerable backing of the so called "Conservative Christians", that he would've strongly Campaigned, while POTUS, against "Gay Marriage, & Insist that Congress revoke that "Satanically Inspired Right"!

Instead,.... The "Com-man", "Master Entertainer",.... Left "Gay Marriage" intact, & Honored the "Lifestyle of Faggotry".

Since Trump's First Term as POTUS,..... Faggotry, has become embedded, & acceptable in "American Christian Churches, & Synagogues".

And Yet "Christians" still Honor, & Embrace the "Wannabe God Donald Trump".

It is "past time" for those who proclaim "Lord!",.... To DEEPLY Examine what they Believe, and to Seek The Truth of The Way!

Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;
Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

You guys still don’t get it

Fans of Obama generated those images. Obama did not request them or spread them.

Trump encourages images of himself as a Super Hero or Deity. He demands that things be named after him and that his staff constantly praise him
