President Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the Bureau of Labor Statistics was hanging around the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, footage shows, prompting a panicked scramble from the White House to paint him as a mere bystander.

The president announced that he was nominating Heritage Foundation economist and Project 2025 architect E.J. Antoni to replace the previous stats chief, whom Trump abruptly fired after receiving several months of weak jobs data.

The choice to appoint a MAGA hardliner to a position that requires nonpartisan professional analysis sparked immediate fears that BLS data will no longer be reliable if the Senate confirms Antoni.

Adding to those partisan concerns, it turns out Antoni—who also happens to have a giant picture of Adolf Hitler’s favorite battleship hanging in his office—was at the Capitol on the day a mob of Trump supporters violently tried to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump has now hired a devotee from the Heritage Foundation to lead the BLS. He was part of Project 2025, the plan Trump said he knew nothing about during the campaign. Now we are going to begin seeing the distortion of statistics to fit the narrative the supreme leader wants to be told. Unfortunately he has convinced at least 30 percent of the population that the truth is fake news and so they will believe the distortion. Altering facts to fit what the "leader" wants to create as a narrative is one of the hallmarks of a dictator. Hopefully me saying this doesn't get the this thread closed, but this is the reality we are now facing.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he was nominating economist E.J. Antoni as the new Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner, 10 days after firing the agency's previous leader following a weak scorecard of the job market, accusing her without evidence of manipulating the figures.

Antoni is currently the chief economist at the influential conservative think tank Heritage Foundation. He has been critical of the BLS, the Labor Department's statistical agency, whose monthly figures about the state of the job market and inflation are consumed by a global audience of economists, investors, business leaders, public policymakers and consumers.

The nomination of Antoni, who contributed to "Project 2025," the controversial conservative plan to overhaul the government, was met with reservations from economists.
