On the amateur level, it is more a form of socializing/business than a sport. You wait around on the tees until you are able to actually hit your ball, followed by the same wait in the fairways. A whole lot of talking goes on and is why so many businessmen use it as a casual way of getting to know the members of your group and finding openings to discuss whatever business you are there for.
