The American drug war has certainly contributed to much of the current clusterfuck. Nonetheless, drugs are illegal in Mexico, regardless of American laws. But there is a bigger picture to be understood. What we see in Mexico is a cultural problem of apathy-turned-embrace toward chaos and lawlessness. The drug cartels are merely a symptom of the cultural problems. The same apathy-turned-embrace phenomenon can be seen in illegal immigration of Mexicans into the United States. Contrary to popular myth, illegal immigration is not a simple matter of taking a walk down the street and renting a house on the wrong side of an invisible line. And it is not a symptom of the "difficulty and expense" of legal immigration. Illegal immigrants typically spend thousands and risk their very lives to come here. They are risk their lives and spend thousands, but they aren't willing to do some paperwork and pay cheaper filing fees? Their actions are not born of the desperation that liberals often claim. They are born of a culturally taught way of thinking, to embrace lawless behavior even when lawful options are available.
