Yes...it will either have to be reworked or abandoned. The last time I checked on the possibilities of just opening a channel from coast to coast the estimated time was something in the ten year range. The canal would have to be three times deeper and the tidal race would probably chew up a half mile of land on both sides. Having said that it would provide huge opportunities for energy production and quadruple the traffic count.
