For me, the party was never great. I am not a huge fan of Andrew Jackson or slavery.
As for when it became a party that I could never trust, it happened well before I was born. It probably started with Woodrow Wilson, but the 1960 Chicago Democrat scandal and the election of Jimmy Carter made it irreparably intolerable.
I can only assume that Trump never really liked the Dems. He appears to have supported them to grease the skids on his business interests. As far as I am concerned, Trump has always been an opportunist and a narcissist.
So, I doubt he ever really believed the Dems were great. He just used them as a means to an end, and just like all narcissist, threw that party away when it no longer served his main interests.
