If you didn't catch the live ceremony with them welcoming the King of England to the USA, you missed quite the show. Very formal, many details and formalities flawlessly adhered to, planes flying overhead, bands playing, military salutes. and recreations of the Revolutionary War, the USA paid great respects to the King and Camilla.
The King even broke into a smile when Trump recalled how years ago, his mother thought Prince Charles was the handsomest man in the world.
Turns out that Trump and King Charles are actually related, cousins of sorts, apparently Trump's second uncle or great grandfather was King John II of Scotland or something related to Trump's mother who was also similarly related to King Charles now. I might not have gotten the exact details right, but you can look it up. Apparently, there IS royalty in Trump's bloodline.
At any rate, Trump and the USA shelled out big time for the King's visit, the first state visit by the UK in nearly 20 years. I've always admired the UK as a friend and ally, it will be interesting what these two can hammer out in lieu of the damage now done to our relationship by Starmer. It was a nice touch the commonalities we shared: the Royal British family, Trump from Scotland, and Melania from Slovenia.
But perhaps the most significant part of this leg of the King's visit will be when the King gives a speech to a joint session of the Congress later today. He will be the first British monarch to address our full Congress since his mother Queen Elizabeth II did so back in 1991. Later tonight, the royal family will be back at the White House for a grand state dinner. I have good hopes and wishes for the outcome.

In a speech, the president says Americans have historically had "no closer friends than the British". Later, the King is due to make a speech to US lawmakers.
