There is an old theory I heard growing up that if one had British or French roots and were born working class than they either came after the British and French colonized Canada (then British North America), or, they gave the monarchy the finger and refused to fight for them.

Those who fought were given a plot of land to farm on. Those who did not were the lower caste. This caste survives to this day.

Perhaps this is why I am still so stubborn, my DNA is the resistance to power and seeking freedom. My great-grandma on my mothers side was Scottish. Not the nicest person, very old school British, born poor here.

I always thought my grandpa would have made a good American down in New Orleans or something. He was a guitarist, played country and swing and could sing. He was a hard worker but quietly a free thinker (I am one of the few who picked his brain and learned of his intellect and character).
