In my opinion stiffing your suppliers or contractors because you just dont want to pay is wrong. Bargaining down an agreed upon rate, knowing you can pressure your supplier or contractor via litigation is wrong. Maybe those are common practices in the construction industry I dont know. If they are, then the people doing it are either amoral or immoral as well.

How is playing hardball in the construction business amoral?

I work in construction, the contractor will try to squeeze every dollar they can out of Change Order work, and the owner will try to make it as cheap as possible.

Most of the complaints about Trump are over Change Order work.

It isn't amoral. I've seen competitions and backsliding for contract negotiations on land and dwellings that would make your hair stand on end. To say its cutthroat, is an understatement.
But not paying your contractors and sub-contractors, defaulting on your obligations, and trying to soft talk banks into giving you loans that you know you won't pay back..is the quickest
way to get a bad reputation...and have your business die a quick death, especially dealing with the sometimes razor thin margin on real estate.

And therein lies the problem with Trump. The successful real estate mogul. He ISN'T successful. He's just gotten good at gaming the system. Start a venture. Lend his name to it. Bleed all the
money you can out of it, and when it threatens to go belly up, fold your tent, declare bankruptcy or pull your support from the project...and leave everyone else holding the bag. That's what
Trump's definition of "cutthroat" is. He's never really had to face the consequences for his shitty and unethical behavior.....yet.

The fact that it seems no lawyer or law firm will touch him suggests that he'll go ambulance chaser again.
Unfortunately, this time, it won't work. Those 45 documents he's claiming EP on?...are gonna get seen by the committee.

But what will be even better is watching Steve Bannon being hauled off to prison after the committee refers a criminal complaint to the DOJ.
I hope CNN is right there with a camera!

You know I am tired of hearing this attack on Trump for not paying his workers/suppliers. I'm in Florida and we have gotten a massive influx of New Yorkers including their workmen. Let me tell you, dealing with them is a whole new world and I could see where it would be necessary to not pay them. They don't act like people from other parts of america and I would know considering that we have owned houses and lived in several states. We live in Florida now, and the influx of NY and their surrounding area has really made my area look like little NY.

New yorkers are constant scammers...I mean constant which is especially true for their workmen. They have no moral compass, but a pathological need to try to cut corners on work or over charge. I get the impression that New yorkers are always trying to get over on one another---so if you let them you are constantly fucked, and Trump was simply a business man who had to refuse to pay for crappy jobs or bills that were padded. From the moment that they meet someone, they are trying to figure out how much they can get out of you. They assume if you have more money, that you should pay more for the same service and will try to get it. You really have to hold your ground and tell them no as they will certainly try fast talking to push their scam.

I am a quiet person, who at one time was inclined to trust people. Not anymore and especially not with NY or NJ people. I usually pay even for the occasional bad service and just never use that person/business again to avoid unnecessary conflict---but the influx of so many NY/NJ has forced me to change. I've had to force myself to lose my southern accent, talk louder, make sure to make eye contact, to be firm and be very very assertive and very specific. You actually have to spell out their job in every detail to them.

They throw tantrums when called out btw----and try to fast talk when you question about billing.......They bully and they have no mercy and no respect for those that don't stand up to them. You better know how much a job should cost and what must done exactly before allowing them ever in the door or they will play all sorts of games. If you live in a better neighborhood, they charge more for the same service unless beat back down----I can see why Trump would tell several of them to just drop dead. Even I have to had to tell a couple of them to just leave as they bitched and whined. You really have to be firm with them.

"Stiffing" is pretty difficult to do in places like NY due to mechanics liens and such.
