This One is Not Going to Work

If you are BORN IN THIS COUNTRY you are a citizen and under no obligation to speak any particular language. I don't know why some people are having so much trouble grasping this concept.

If you can't vote, your rights are being violated. The same shit democrats in the former Confederacy tried to pull on the newly freed slaves.

AT&T provides the service. All it takes is a phone call. ...
Hospitals have such services available, but they are very unreliable. In criminal cases, any decent defense attorney would tear that to pieces. Just look at this thread and consider how complicated this kind of "speak English right now!" emotional reaction would play out in real life.

Cool…how about this; speak no English get NO free shit….deal?
.

It's not that hard. Spanish is based in the same language group that English is.

What was amazing is meeting a youngster who was a refugee from southeast Asia, whose native language was based on a far different language group than English. I complimented him on his impressive command of English and asked him how long he had to study to get so fluent, with no hint of accent, and he replied, "six months"! If he can do it, why can't the rest of his family?

And if someone whose native language is Vietnamese or Laotian can do it, a Spanish speaker can do it.

I will soon have the great experience of teaching English to a group of Spanish speakers who are very motivated. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Citizens have the right to vote, of course.
Not if they cannot do so intelligently and understand the written language. There is no right to having a ballot in Turkish, Italian, Greek, or Hebrew anywhere in the Constitution. Besides, the names are the same despite the language difference. Learning how to vote is a problem and should be their responsibility to learn ahead of time.

The parents did not see to their learning English before reaching adulthood.

I have a Mexican-born friend with three kids under 18. She speaks Spanish and English. Her American born kids are US citizens, and all attended public school where they were taught in English. They all speak fluent English and some Spanish.

My son's best friend and boxing coach was born to Mexican immigrants in Texas. His wife is of Italian ancestry, and they have 5 kids I believe, all now adults. Not one speaks Spanish, despite his being quite comfortable with it.

A child born in the United States and educated in our schools should speak English before voting. EOS.

Making it "official" is just political fluff.

Most of the world now speaks English........although very badly.

I swear you must lead a very sheltered existence outside your language enclave to have become so irrationally averse to requiring citizens to be conversant in either English or Spanish. Any other language should be your responsibility. Other countries do not cater to other languages overseas as much because English is becoming more standard everywhere. I was shocked to learn how many Jews born and raised in Israel could be easily mistaken as someone from the US.

Why would/should the U.S. require anyone to speak Spanish?
Requiring citizens to speak a language that only exists here at scale because we have been illegally invaded seems like a concession to the invasion.

The point is that there is no such requirement by law.

If there is anything that I am NOT, it's "sheltered."
