Americans are fundamentally polytheists, worshiping at the shrines of many gods.

Many who call themselves Christians are as polytheistic as Hindus. We, of course, have different names for our gods of prosperity, fertility, good luck, celebrity or whatever.

Money and success have often been thought of as America’s gods. “God is gold,” “the Almighty Dollar,” and all that. But things have changed over the years. Money has been demoted to a somewhat lesser deity, though still devoutly worshiped.

America’s Top Gods
Here are North America’s seven most popular gods. By “god” I mean something (anything) in our life that commands more loyalty, dedication and devotion than the one true Living God. Not necessarily the highest loyalty, since many of us are functional polytheists, whatever we claim. But sincere and central devotion.

The question then becomes: What is your or my functional pantheon?

From the biblical perspective, of course, such “gods” are really idols. Idols that the Bible both denounces and mocks.

True, it is idolatry. But the article gets it wrong (collegiate sports of all things? Really?? And no mention of... television?)

The top seven American Idols are the twenty, the ten, the five, the dollar, the quarter, the dime and the nickel.
Because nobody likes pennies.

Are mortals so blind they cannot see the reality of the matter about God?

The only true living God=YHWH(Jehovah)
All other gods is satan posing as that god. Including the non existent trinity that was made up at Catholicism councils.

^ That is an orchestrated effort. 90% of the college students that go into school as Christians come out as atheists, or anything but Christian. Our children are being taught not to believe in Christ, while Islam is being touted as the way to go. It is the reason behind "free" college. The government wants to brainwash our children from childhood to adulthood. No exceptionalism, no patriotism, no education. Just brainwashed lemmings. Even the kids are starting to protest the fact that social activism has replaced their education.

Sounds like you're saying the more education is let in, the more religion is let go.

Well ----- yeah.

Not a very intelligent article. Wager perfect for Atheists and such, but didn't seem all that thought out.

Sports? My parents have always been big into OSU football. But never in my entire life, to this day, have I seen them even once, miss a single Sunday service, or a single Wednesday service, or a church function, or social gathering of believers, or Church Camp, or Mission trip, for the sake of a football game.

So number 1 and 2, gone. Nor do I see any problem with being a professional athlete, and being a Christian.

Fame and Celebrity? I can't say that it was ever a big thing any my family, or my extended family. It's certainly not something I have ever tried for.

Automobiles? My father had a G30 Chevy Van, 1989 I think. I drive around a 2003 Grand Marquis. Cost me $3000.

Guns? I can't think of a single church service in which guns were even mentioned. Now do we want to protect our rights? Yes. Do we want to defend our families? Yes. Is the implication here that the only way to be a true Christian, is to allow you and your family to be raped and murdered? Don't be ridiculous.

Money, Riches and Wealth? There is a certain sub-set of Christianity, called the Health-Wealth Gospel. It's kind of a joke to the larger Evangelical movement. The belief system is "G-d wants you healthy and wealthy!". It's an ideology that could only work in a wealthy country like the US. But it's not Biblical. How do you explain the fact, that the Apostle Paul, who wrote most of the new testament, was neither healthy, nor wealthy? Apparently he didn't have enough faith.... or some such nonsense.

But outside of that, I don't see Christians worshiping money and riches. Just because we support freedom from an oppressive government, and deny that stealing people's rightfully earned income is good, doesn't mean we worship it. That kind of childish logic, may work for the left, but the rest of us are not so immature.

National Security? Again, this is the logic of a left-winger. Claiming that supporting national security, is making an Idol of it, implies that the only way to be a dedicated Christian, is to provide free flights for Islamic State militants to the US. I have never believed that our government was the guarantor of our security. I have always believed that without G-d, nothing we do will provide for our security. That doesn't mean I should support reasonable policies to help with basic security. Having terrorists land in land connected countries, and just riding across the boarder, is not logical, or reasonable.

I'd say
top 10(cause 7 is too hard) in this country are:
1)Money
2)the Booty (it's why JayLo &Kim Kardashian are so popular)
3)the tractor (they think it's sexy)
4)fantasy football
5)beer
6)the toilet (bowing to the porcelin god after all night drinking)
7) food
8)cell phones
9)computers
10)tatoo parlors

Agree, my top 3 would be;

#1 Money

#2 Fame (which would include the fame through sports), and the tool for fame is the TV

#3 Physics, but not science physics (I wish), it is physical looks

This is the top 3, not only in this country, but in most countries, majority of the people worship, imo...

Sorry Jesus

Not so much. All of my family goes to church on Sunday, whether we miss the game or not. Sorry NFL.

The NFL rules Sunday
Your Gods are powerless. If your God were so powerful, he would stand up to the worship of the mighty NFL

0.o Of course not. Why would he do that? G-d has never sought to force people to worship him. It's a choice. Read the Bible. Did G-d force the Babylonians to convert? Or any number of those nations around Israel? Nope.

Nor does he violate free will. If the pagans want to worship football... that's fine. No Christian cares what you pagans do with your Sunday. Knock yourself out.

But you try and force me to watch football instead of going to church? Yeah, good luck. Not happening.

Didnt he destroy Babylonians?

Yes and no.

Telling the future, isn't the same as causing it.

However, it does say that G-d stirred up the Medes against them, but look carefully at the reasons given. It wasn't because G-d said covert and worship me, and they didn't. It had to do with their arrogance, and violence.

The only time G-d directly punishes other countries (as near as I can tell), is when other countries interfere with his land, or his people, or they try and directly thumb their nose at G-d. Yeah, if you make it your goal to insult G-d, you'll end up like Belshazzar, who was specifically singled out for destruction, because he specifically flaunted his arrogance at G-d.

But outside of that, not so much. Don't see G-d punishing countries randomly, because they refuse to worship him.

Never fear

As long as you hold your services before 1 o'clock kickoff you will be able to get people to come to service

When you are the "almighty" god, then it "kinda" is.....

Why would you say that? If I had omniscient, and knew what the lottery number was going to be... that doesn't mean I caused the lottery numbers.

Just because G-d can cause something, doesn't mean he did. Just like if you screw around with a bunch of girls, you end up with STDs and child support payments. Now if I choose to do that, and I end up in that situation, the fact G-d knew that would be the outcome of my choices, doesn't mean he caused it, does it? Because I have chosen not to, and not had that result. Does that mean that somehow with my infinite power, I prevented G-d from causing me to have an STD and child support payments?

No no... G-d can, and does, when it suits him, intervene in human affairs. But most of the time, he simply created the system, and the law of reaping and sowing, is simply a built in feature.
