The thing is, Reagan really was against tariffs.

Tariffs depress trade, which is never good.
Ideally correct. However, when countries impose high tariffs on our products, and even subsidize their products, Chinese steel comes to mind, that foreign "dumping" needs to be opposed by using tariffs. To create "fair trade".

Remember, democrats are supremely gullible…They’ll believe anything anyone says that agrees with them.

That certainly seems to be the case. ONe would have to be extremely gullible to believe that hard core leftie is a conservative republican.

Targeted, not blanket. All Trump is doing is causing chaos and encouraging out trade partners to find other sources.

Republicans used to be against tariffs

Until Trump

My god that was a simplistic thing to say.

The policy failed to deliver. We are reacting to that failure by changing our ideas and policies.

IMO, it took us WAY TO LONG to react. We should have elected Patrick Buchanan back in the 90s. We could have reversed these negative trends and saved a generation and a half of suffering for the working class.

By enacting tariffs on countries (that Trump has an issue with ) that don’t have a trade imbalance?

Reagan was also strongly against Communism. Do you think he would have let Moscow run a $400B annual trade surplus on the back of U.S economy and johs outsourced there? Get real here, China and others use multiple trade barriers,.some far worse than tariffs.I assure you. If the S.C tries to force the reversal or.tariffs, not only would the U.S economy be hurt, yoir deficit far more.impactful,.foreign investment weakened, but it would take away the Executive.branch power and without question they would force Trump to walk away from USMCA and revert back to the trade deal of the 1970s. Reagan hit Japan with a.100% tariff on ally Japan, tariffs are a part of world trade.

"Is America Becoming More Like China?"

A good video, you don't need to watch it, but it's basically pointing out that Trump is copying China and Russia a lot.

Hypocrite! MAGA uses the words of any Democrat past or present to push their points.
Trump is Mr Cheapshot himself, but then Westwall is a dick who hasn't ever had an original thought in his life.

I'm fine with that as long as we keep getting $400b a year in Federal revenue.
The supply chains will resolve.

Trump terminates all U.S. trade negotiations with Canada over Reagan tariffs TV ad

President Donald Trump said Thursday night that he was terminating all trade negotiations with Canada because the Ontario provincial government aired an ad featuring former President Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.

Trump’s announcement accused Canada of trying to influence a pending U.S. Supreme Court case that could doom many of his tariffs, including ones on Canada.

His statement came after The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said that the ad misrepresents a presidential radio address Reagan delivered in April 1987, and that his remarks were edited without permission.

The foundation did not say what was misleading.

Ontario enlists Ronald Reagan against Trump’s tariffs

TORONTO — Ontario is using Ronald Reagan to warn that Donald Trump’s tariffs will cost Americans their jobs.

“We’re going to repeat that message to every Republican district there is right across the entire country,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said this week, teasing the new ad campaign at a Toronto business luncheon.

The one-minute ad excerpts a 1987 radio address by Reagan to justify imposing 100 percent tariffs on Japanese electronics over a trade dispute over semiconductors.

Reagan’s address warned of the long-term economic perils of tariffs on foreign imports sold to Americans as a protectionist policy and explained they were imposed to sort a particular problem — not to begin a trade war.

“But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer,” Reagan narrates in the ad. “High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. Then the worst happens. Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs.”

China’s embassy in Washington notably used the same Reagan clip to troll Trump’s global tariffs when the China-U.S. trade war heated up in the spring.

Don has his extra large shorts in a bunch for being called out (posthumously) by Ron, the patron saint of conservatives. The crux of Reagan's remarks being consumers ultimately bear most of the cost of tariffs. Something the tariff man doesn't like being reminded of.

Tariff costs to companies this year to hit $1.2 trillion, with consumers taking most of the hit, S&P says

Of course, consumers aren't the only ones who get hurt. Just ask the soy bean farmers.

Yeah, so?

The world has changed since Reagan was in office

Both china and canada use tariffs to maintain to help their own country

Nice change of the subject there.

We were discussing your strawman that the republicans shitcanned their FREE TRADE policy just because TRUMP.

I explained what actually happened, ie, the internal debate FINALLY dealt properly with the historical FACT that the policy did not deliver.

What you should have done, if you were operating in good faith, is admit that, and apologize for your insulting and idiotic earlier comments.

Instead, you skip over that point and move on to arguing whether our new policy is working.

All the while, planning to circle BACK to your previous now debunked point, ie that the gop dropped FREE TRADE just because TRUMP.

Did you see the airplane interview when Trump was just flat-out lying to the reporters' faces?

"Reagan loved tariffs", he said. "Canada is cheating, they're cheating".

Jesus. I've never seen one person singled out for absolutely ZERO standards like this. The press is afraid of him, because they know he'll go after them and their organizations and he'll cut off their access. Intimidation, 24/7. That's how authoritarians control the press.

They always have.

The tariffs have changed.
They were always targeted.

They never imposed blanket tariffs, like Trump and Hoover.

Well, Canadian authorities are wisely.pointing out certain U.S policies to try and convince Western Canada to not separate. Albertans are known for a love of personal freedom and if the U.S is viewed as the oppositie of that, as being more like Eastern Canada is known; there is no way they separate. Perhaps I don't give Canadian authorities their due. Maybe they are having their "Berlin Wall is falling" moment ad like the soldiers and border guards in East Germany drastically changed from a policy of firing on citizens to allowing them freedom, maybe Canada will become MORE free in an effort to convince Canadians that it is better here than in U.S.A.
