The Tariffs

Trump is DESTROYING your economy, and your national reputation. Why negotiate someone who tears up the deals he negotiates and refuses to honour them? It's a complete waste of time.

It's paying an extortionist, and you pay them once, and there's no end to it.
Trump lacks the capacity to do things as a normal, intelligent adult would.

There are ways to negotiate properly, including civil discourse. You can apply appropriate pressures carefully when needed to strengthen your position. And importantly, you maintain the relationship for future initiatives. This isn't rocket science, but it does require intelligence and an understanding of human nature.

But no. He is a child, and this is all he knows. Since his flock doesn't really understand higher-level communication either, they think his way is real cool n' stuff.

Makes them "feel" strong and bold.

nonsense. all you need to do is bring in some receipts. But you can't.

We are now paying attention to the swamp creatures behind the screens. All you demofks in here whining about what we now see is pure glory!!!!

so you think that people don't have the right to choose what products they want to buy? how dictartorish of you!

Does your local liquor store carry EVERY product available in the world, or do they select which brands they choose to carry???? I'm happy to see them take US wines off the shelves of my local LCBO. Maybe they'll bring in more French and German wines, which I prefer. Our local LCBO, which is small, doesn't carry much in the way of European wines. It's either local wines or US wines. We have 1/2 of a shelf of French wines. I have to go to the city to buy my favourite French or German wines.

There is only one local winery I like, so my choices are far more limited by all of the American products they carry. The LCBO is the largest buyer of US wines and spirits in the world, and the Government of Ontario, which owns the LCBO, will have no problem buying elsewhere, and the result will be MORE variety for Canadians, not less.

My liquor store keeps stock on what they make money on. economics is really quite simple.

Having said that, you still want dictatorship. Look at you wittle PM sucker

nonsense. all you need to do is bring in some receipts. But you can't.

Trump brings lots of receipts for his business transactions:

7 corporate bankruptcies and counting - A record for an American businessman, and not in a good way

4000+ civil lawsuits, most of which were for "breach of contract".

Multiple convictions/settlements for fraud, tax evasion, bank and wire fraud. Trump didn't even try to mount a defense of the charges.

The nation of Panama is suing the Trump Corporation for tax evasion.

Canada investigated Ivanka Trump for fraud in the recent Trump Hotel bankruptcy.

Good for you. I'm not trying to convince you of anything.

If you don't like my posts, tough shit.
You will never convince me of anything you low life loser who most always just shooting off your mouth creating division. But here, more of my receipts cause that's how I operate.

More winning! The Mexican President just agreed to a one-month pause on the tariffs against them, and has offered to deploy Mexican troops to the border.

That's how you do it, President Trump! Now if you can just get her to throw in complimentary chips and salsa for every American for life.

Trump tariffs on Mexico to be paused one month, Sheinbaum says, as she announces troop border deployment

"Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that the United States has agreed to pause for one month the implementation of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on goods from her country.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” Sheinbaum wrote in a tweet, according to as translation from Spanish.

This is breaking news. Please refresh for updates."

I worked for a lawyer who was the most brilliant negotiator I've ever seen. Our biggest client said that he met my boss while selling one of his properties and he never wanted to see him on the other side of the table ever again. When Gary walked into that room, he knew more about the vendor, and the property, than the Vendor's lawyer did.

Trump is the WORST negotiator I've ever seen. He never prepares, he just walks in, "reads the room" and goes with his "gut instincts". The same gut instincts that have lead to 7 business bankruptcies and billions of dollars in business losses.

The same practices that lead Trump to crash the economy in his first Administration - lavish spending, and no discernable management skills.

Still parroting MAGA lies. Trump HATES Trudeau because every time he goes up against Trudeau, he's forced to back down, and Canada gets what it wants.

Remember when Trump cancel mask sales to Canada on Friday afternoon during the pandemic. The masks were shipped on Monday.

Speaking of Dictatorships, how is your drunken, abusive, FOX host working out as Secretary of Defence working out for you????? Or firing half of the FBI agents working on investigating terrorism?

I guess decapitating the FAA and trying to fire all of the air traffic controllers really hasn't worked out well for you. Two plane crashes resulting in dozens of deaths.

How many pregnant women died because they had a miscarriage, because Republicans banned care for pregnant women.

". . . Now back to tariffs.

Regrettably, the Curtiss-Wright case — though wrongly decided and absurdly reasoned — is still good law today, and presidents from FDR to Donald Trump have relied upon its authority for their unilateral decisions on American foreign policy.

I call this regrettable because it constitutes a pronounced transfer of power from Congress to the president, in defiance of the Constitution.

FDR gave us the welfare state. Perhaps Donald Trump will undo it.

But all this happens at the price of constitutional norms. Before Curtiss-Wright — and even since — the Supreme Court ruled that all federal power comes from the Constitution and from no other source. That’s because James Madison and his colleagues created a central government of limited powers — limited by and articulated in the Constitution.

But Curtiss-Wright says some federal power comes from Great Britain! So, where does this leave us?

The Congress is not a general legislature like the British Parliament, and the president is not a monarch. To argue that powers come from some source other than the Constitution is anti-constitutional.

And in this case, to claim with a straight face that George III’s powers were reposed into the American presidency is an absurdity that would have been rejected summarily and unambiguously by the Framers.

History and politics often change the rules. Until 110 years ago, with the exception of Lincoln’s presidency, the federal government operated under the Madisonian model: The federal government can only do that which is expressly authorized by the Constitution.

From and after the dreadful Progressive Era, the Wilsonian model has prevailed — the federal government can address any national problem for which there is a political will, subject only to that which is expressly prohibited by the Constitution.

Add to the Wilsonian model the nonsense from Curtiss-Wright, and you have a presidency that can tax any foreign event and create a domestic crime."

It feels as though this country is slowly but surely headed to a dictatorial totalitarian gov't. Separation of Powers is eroding away as Congress is ceding too much power to the Executive Branch.

Ford CEO says tariffs could 'blow a hole' in US auto industry

It's not just the auto industry, it's also other industries that use steel and/or aluminum to make their products like washers and dryers, refrigerators, bikes, lawnmowers, etc. It could be that tariffs could be mostly a tool used by Trump as leverage to get concessions in other areas. And I have no doubt that many other countries have been using tariffs, quotas, and suchlike against us and he wants to rectify that. But I do think that if enacted for some longer period of time that inflation will rise to some degree and hurt the American consumer.
