SCOTUS literally caused them to turn the busses around on their way to the airport. They felt it was important enough to react with unprecedented speed to prevent Trump's illegal attempt to ignore earlier rulings.
They did so with only two dissenting Justices.

An ex parte order like that is rare. And it’s not the same thing as an eventual ruling on the merits. It is designed merely to maintain the status quo until the actual decision is made. (If they “permit” the Administration to proceed, the deportees can just wait a bit longer to get the boot. But if they deny the Administration the right to do exactly what the law says it can do, then it would make little sense to allow the deportations prematurely.)

The whole reason for the rushed order..before the lower court had even ruled, so fast that the two dissenting justices could not even publish their dissents...was that Trump was trying an end run around previous court orders.
The busses were literally on the way to the airport...had to turn around.
FYI...we are not at war...those illegals are NOT enemy combatants....and Trump will lose on this one.
