The South and the Civil War

True enough but Lincoln shouldn't have let it happen. Old Abe gets credit for "saving the Union" when it fell apart under his watch. His advisers said the conflict would never last beyond the summer and the media at the time encouraged Washington residents to ride out to Manassas (Bull Run) to watch the fun. The fun turned to panic when the Union was routed.
The only way Lincoln could have prevented the war was to lose the election. And the press is NOT the Government no matter what they think.

Did Lincoln follow the advice of the media at the time? He could have bowed out like Biden or he could have made deals with southern leaders like Trump. Avoiding the carnage would have been worth anything but Lincoln was apparently too consumed with personal problems to be bothered.

he offered to pass an amendment protecting slavery in the South. What more could he do?

He could have made promises even if he couldn't keep them. He criminally misjudged the mess he was in on the eve of the conflict. Maybe it was wishful thinking based on bad information and biased assumptions.

he had no power to do much Congress was not in session and even calling up the Guard could be viewed as not following protocol. I dont know what he could do about an unreasonable bunch of neanderthals bent on war.

I visited a few of my former classmate's last fall. 2 in Tennessee and 1 in Georgia. It was interesting to see and hear the reenactments and discussion of the Civil War battles. In addition, Civil War monuments were far more common in the South. It's as if the war just ended. Being from the Pacific Northwest folks here and the rest of the North rarely think about, but in the South it's still a really big deal.

Any idea why?
They lost.

I think it is a Southern inferiority complex
The Civil War was a case where they stood up and fought against those who look down on them

As to the monuments. Most were put up by the Daughters of the Confederacy as a means to keep negroes in their place. The erection of monuments was directly correlated to rises in Civil Rights and resulting klan activities
Most monuments were put up decades after the war to preserve jim crow thru fear.

Oddly in this case, the history was written by the losers.
Shortly after the war, The Lost Cause movement took hold that sanitized the role of the Confederacy.
Monuments, schools, military bases were all named after Confederate heroes…..relatively few for Union heroes
The legacy of Gen Grant was smeared

The "Neanderthals" weren't on Mars. He could have gotten word to them and made it clear that he would talk with Southern agitators. It's Lincoln's freaking responsibility that he misunderstood the mess the Country was in on the eve of the rebellion and he believed what he wanted to believe about the potential duration of the conflict.

Do you ever ask yourself why the entire western hemisphere terminated slavery without war, except the good old USA?

Because our south preferred to create a permanent slave state to ensure their peculiar institution would last forever

Lincoln supported the original 13th amendment that would have legalized slavery forever.
The war was over the economy. Not slavery.
A Southern economy built on free slave labor

And your boy Abe was more than happy to allow slavery forever.

Visit a freaking library. Sherman was a hero and Atlanta was burned. Union general "Beast" Butler authorized the rape of New Orleans women. Being traitors they deserved it. Grant sent Union troops to make waste the Shenandoah Valley. Union general David (Black Dave) Hunter burned every barn and ran off stock and stole every treasure in the Valley until he was chased away by Confederate soldiers who were recovering from wounds in Lynchburg
War is hell……..William T Sherman

Running the war on “Gentleman’s Terms” led to an unending war that killed hundreds of thousands

Grant decided to bring the South to its knees
It worked

And your boy Abe was more than happy to allow slavery forever.

Lincoln was willing to do what was necessary to preserve the Union
Why did the south secede?
Because they lost an election and feared Lincoln would take their slaves

And yet Lincoln told the South in his first inaugural speech he would make slavery a constitutional right, if they stayed. So, apparently there was more to it than slavery, because they still seceded.

There never was any fear from slave owners that Lincoln would take their slaves. Abe was an ardent racist even in his time.

Lincoln was an abolitionist for years. See the Lincoln Douglass debates
As President, he was willing to put aside his personal beliefs to save the nation

Read the Articles of Secession for each state

Slavery, Slavery, Slavery, Slavery
Yes as I stated slavery was part of it, but not entirely. The South wanted the western territories to include slave states. Lincoln was against this.

However you erroneously claimed the slave owners thought Lincoln was going to take their slaves.
