The Canaanites Were Not Salvageable --- They Had Sunk To The Very Bottom
On The Immorality Scale:
{A} Cold Blooded Murder.
{B} Incest With Close Family Members.
{C} Murdered Their Own Children {Molech}.
{D} Blood-Lust Gory Murder Religious Ceremonies.
{E} Sex With Animals.
God's purpose was to get rid of all that up there and replace it with the
religion of the nation of Israel which prohibited all such vile sins.

"The Lord said to Moses, speak to the Israelites and say to them,
You must not do as they do in the land of Canaan where I am bringing
you. Do not follow their practices." Leviticus 18:1-3

"Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways {listed in Leviticus 18:6-23}
because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you
became defiled."

"For all these things were done by the people who lived in the land
before you" Leviticus 18:27

". . . the detestable customs that were practiced before you came"
Leviticus 18:30

So what were they doing that was so bad?

Here is the list of the sins of the Canaanites:

(1) They were having sex with their close family members.
Leviticus 18:6

(2) They were having sex with their mothers.
Leviticus 18:7

(3) They were having sex with their sisters.
Leviticus 18:9

(4) They were having sex with their grandchildren.
Leviticus 18:10

(5) They were having sex with their aunts.
Leviticus 18:14

(6) They were having sex with their daughters-in law.
Leviticus 18:15

(7) They were having sex with their brother's wife.
Leviticus 18:16

( 8 ] They were having sex with their neighbor's wife..
Leviticus 18:20

(9) They were having homosexual sex.
Leviticus 18:22

(10) They were giving their children to be murdered in sacrifice to Molech.
Leviticus 18:21

Now The Canaanites Had Sunk To Bestiality.

(11) The Canaanites were having sex with animals.
Leviticus 18:23

(12) Their women were specifically mentioned as having sex with animals.
Leviticus 18:23

There was a total of 6 tribes that were practicing (1) through (12) up there:

Hittites
Amorites
Canaanites
Perizzites
Hivites
Jebusites
All 6 tribes are generally referred to as the "Canaanites."
Deuteronomy 20:16-18

The command of God to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 20:16 "do not leave alive
anything that breathes" was applicable only to these 6 tribes that were practicing
(1) through (12) listed up-post. All the other many tribes and cities that were living
at a distance from the Canaanites were to be offered an opportunity to make peace
with the Israelites and were never the object of total annihilation as was the 6 totally
corrupt Canaanite nations.

See Deuteronomy 20:11 and Deuteronomy 20:15 on the offer of peace to be
made to the nations living at a distance from the Canaanites. The reason for
the offer of peace was that these nations living at a distance from the
Canaanites were morally salvageable and they were accordingly shown
mercy if they would agree to make peace with the Israelites.

"washed her hands in human gore" . . . .

Start quote.
Consider the bloodlust and violence of the Canaanite deity Anath, the patroness
of both war and sex.

The late archaeologist William Albright describes the Canaanite deity Anath's
massacre in the following gory scene.

The blood was so deep that she waded in it up to her knees -- nay, up to her neck.
Under her feet were human heads, above her human hands flew like locusts.

In her sensuous delight she decorated herself with suspended (human) heads while
she attached (human) hands to her girdle.

Her joy at the butchery is described in even more sadistic language. Her liver swelled
with laughter, her heart was full of joy, the liver of Anath (was full of) exultation.

Afterwards Anath was satisfied and washed her hands in human gore before
proceeding to other occupations.
End quote.

The above quote regarding Anath is from Is God A Moral Monster: Making Sense
Of The Old Testament God, by Paul Copan, page 159

So?

So the following seems very reasonable . . . .

"However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an
inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy
them-the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites-as
the LORD your God has commanded you. Otherwise, they will teach you
to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and
you will sin against the LORD your God. __Deuteronomy 20:16-18

The Canaanites were prosperous and successful.. We know a great deal more about them since the discovery of Ras Shamra and the Ugarit writings... and archaeology has really helped.

This is more about demonizing the neighbors than the Cananites being evil. Most serious scholars now think the Hebrews were Northcoast Canaanites and Abraham was from Urfa near Haran.

This is a serious look at the Canaanite religion and at the Canaanites themselves.

Excerpt:

In the ancient texts, “Canaan” refers to land, not ethnic groups and not culture, and “Canaanite” designates a person who is from the land of Canaan (cf. Ezek. 16:3). The land of Canaan appears to have been, loosely, the eastern seaboard of the Mediterranean.

Any communities in the region known now as southwestern Syria, Lebanon, Israel, western Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority might be designated Canaanite by an ancient scribe (Tammuz 2001). For example, a royal inscription from Egypt describes Israel as one of several peoples defeated by Pharaoh Merneptah when he conquered the land of Canaan (Pritchard 1969a, p. 378).

It is no surprise that material objects, temple structures, artistic styles, and other cultural artifacts are relatively uniform over a vast expanse of real estate larger than the region usually designated Canaan and therefore provide no foundation for distinguishing Canaanite from various ethnic identities (Levy 1998 provides an excellent overview; see also Finkelstein 1988; Finkelstein & Na’aman 1994; Bloch-Smith & Nakhai 1999; contra Zevit 2001, pp. 84–85).

In some periods, “Canaan” was a political term. It designated the northeastern portion of the Egyptian empire, the precise borders of which could fluctuate depending on the politics of the day (Rainey 1963; Pitard 1987, pp. 27–80; Redford 1992; Na’aman 1994, 1999; Finkelstein 1996; Tammuz 2001; Goren, Finkelstein & Na’aman 2003).

At times, the Egyptians designated all their northeastern holdings Canaan (equivalent to another term, Hurru) while at other times “Canaan” designated the southern portion of this region more specifically. In later times, “Canaan” came increasingly to designate the coastal regions also called Phoenicia.

“Canaanite” could become a very loosely defined ethnic term among people who had migrated from Phoenicia to the western Mediterranean.

I think the differences between Israelite religion and others in Canaan comes from the Israelite exposure to the Egyptians religion and culture. There are several obvious examples, the Ark of the Covenant being one, of ancient Egyptian customs being absorbed by the Israelites.

{D} Blood-Lust Gory Murder Religious Ceremonies.

"Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways {listed in Leviticus 18:6-23}
because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you
became defiled."

(6) They were having sex with their daughters-in law.

History is written by the victors.

JAG

All Bedouin hauled their gods around in a box on a litter.. ..and often it was a piece of meteorite.

Magnets were godlike. Still are to most. Thanks for that link, surada.
The name “Israel” makes an excellent example of the difficulties associated with Canaanite identity. This word suggests an unselfconsciously Canaanite worldview, since “Israel” means “El strives” (or perhaps “El is just”; cf. Margalith 1990), designating the bearer of the name as one who affirms the Canaanite god El, as in Genesis 33:20. If the Bible’s claim that the Israelites were non-Canaanite migrants to Palestine preserves any genuine memory, then obviously the name provides no evidence for this, nor does archaeology provide unambiguous ethnic data
I like how Baal slowly becomes El, until El is eventually forgotten shortly after Baal steals El's wife. Baal's more masculine sounding name is probably what doomed El to immortal obscurity, LOL.
But, but, “El strives” “El is just”!
"Baals"!

Dan El means God is judge. The poem is a precussor to the Book of Daniel.

Pretty interesting stuff.

Archaeology would help more if states like Syria wouldn't prevent research once discovering of their significance to pre-Canaanite Hebrew civilization. Look the city of Ebla. Ras Shamra confirms most of what was already known from the Hebrew texts.

This was unlikely about demonization, since the Hebrew texts are focused mainly on harsh self-criticism than towards any other people. More so that the findings you've mentioned essentially confirm what was mostly known from those writings.

The context of Avraham Avinu A"H appearance is not as the first Hebrew,
but rather as among the last remnants of a more ancient civilization,
listed generally among others as the context for his life.

Ras Shamra predates the Hebrews.. There are 4-5 languages in the Ugarit writings.

All the evidence points to the Canaanites being successful.. Even you still demonize not just the Canaanites but current neighbors as well.

Goes back to about 6,000 BC... or earlier.

Kingdoms of Syria - Ugarit - History Files
Although Ugarit was probably occupied much earlier, its first permanent settlement seems to date to around 6000 BC, at which point a fortified wall was put up around it. The city was located on the Syrian coast, and remains within modern Syria.

Ras Shamra predates the Hebrews.. There are 4-5 languages in the Ugarit writings.

All the evidence points to the Canaanites being successful.. Even you still demonize not just the Canaanites but current neighbors as well.

Read Clean Break Strategy.

And all your evidence confirms the Hebrew texts in detail,
if you actually cared to read anything you post beyond the headline,
"Ras Shamra predates the proto Hebrew civilization"- based on what?

Goes back to about 6,000 BC... or earlier.

Kingdoms of Syria - Ugarit - History Files
Although Ugarit was probably occupied much earlier, its first permanent settlement seems to date to around 6000 BC, at which point a fortified wall was put up around it. The city was located on the Syrian coast, and remains within modern Syria.

The settlement, not the texts.
The texts are from around 1200-1450 BC.

Exactly the same period as you know who?

As I've said research does not actually differentiate, or has sufficient data to differentiate Canaanites from the local civilization predating them.

Research in key sites in Syria has been prevented for decades.

"Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways {listed in Leviticus 18:6-23}
because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you
became defiled."

{D} Blood-Lust Gory Murder Religious Ceremonies.
{E} Sex With Animals.

Jewish scholars are using the Ugaritic text to better translate the Hebrew scriptures. ..but there are 4 other semitic languages older than Hebrew.

Some of the texts are older and refer to the mythos of Sumer or the Egyptian Book of the Dead.

Genesis and Exodus were not written until after the Babylonian exile.

It seems pretty clear that only the elite could read and write. Everyone else was illiterate.

It's fascinating stuff.

The Ugaritic texts make it clear that the religion of lBaal had to do with the necessities of life, the crops and food on which survival depended. Moreover, that fundamental appeal may have been bolstered by a further attraction: there is debate among scholars as to the role of sexual activity in the Ugaritic worship of Baal; in the mythology, the appetites of Baal for sex and violence are considerable.

Quartz Hill School of Theology

The infinitive, in Ugaritic as in other Semitic languages, can simply be the noun used as an infinitive. Again, this can only be determined by the context of the words used. 2- Stems: Ugaritic, like Hebrew, makes use of various stems (like Piel, Pual, etc.).
