The Canaanites Were Not Salvageable --- They Had Sunk To The Very Bottom
On The Immorality Scale:
{A} Cold Blooded Murder.
{B} Incest With Close Family Members.
{C} Murdered Their Own Children {Molech}.
{D} Blood-Lust Gory Murder Religious Ceremonies.
{E} Sex With Animals.
God's purpose was to get rid of all that up there and replace it with the
religion of the nation of Israel which prohibited all such vile sins.

"The Lord said to Moses, speak to the Israelites and say to them,
You must not do as they do in the land of Canaan where I am bringing
you. Do not follow their practices." Leviticus 18:1-3

"Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways {listed in Leviticus 18:6-23}
because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you
became defiled."

"For all these things were done by the people who lived in the land
before you" Leviticus 18:27

". . . the detestable customs that were practiced before you came"
Leviticus 18:30

So what were they doing that was so bad?

Here is the list of the sins of the Canaanites:

(1) They were having sex with their close family members.
Leviticus 18:6

(2) They were having sex with their mothers.
Leviticus 18:7

(3) They were having sex with their sisters.
Leviticus 18:9

(4) They were having sex with their grandchildren.
Leviticus 18:10

(5) They were having sex with their aunts.
Leviticus 18:14

(6) They were having sex with their daughters-in law.
Leviticus 18:15

(7) They were having sex with their brother's wife.
Leviticus 18:16

( 8 ] They were having sex with their neighbor's wife..
Leviticus 18:20

(9) They were having homosexual sex.
Leviticus 18:22

(10) They were giving their children to be murdered in sacrifice to Molech.
Leviticus 18:21

Now The Canaanites Had Sunk To Bestiality.

(11) The Canaanites were having sex with animals.
Leviticus 18:23

(12) Their women were specifically mentioned as having sex with animals.
Leviticus 18:23

There was a total of 6 tribes that were practicing (1) through (12) up there:

Hittites
Amorites
Canaanites
Perizzites
Hivites
Jebusites
All 6 tribes are generally referred to as the "Canaanites."
Deuteronomy 20:16-18

The command of God to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 20:16 "do not leave alive
anything that breathes" was applicable only to these 6 tribes that were practicing
(1) through (12) listed up-post. All the other many tribes and cities that were living
at a distance from the Canaanites were to be offered an opportunity to make peace
with the Israelites and were never the object of total annihilation as was the 6 totally
corrupt Canaanite nations.

See Deuteronomy 20:11 and Deuteronomy 20:15 on the offer of peace to be
made to the nations living at a distance from the Canaanites. The reason for
the offer of peace was that these nations living at a distance from the
Canaanites were morally salvageable and they were accordingly shown
mercy if they would agree to make peace with the Israelites.

Repeat . . .

{B} Incest With Close Family Members.
{C} Murdered Their Own Children {Molech}
{D} Blood-Lust Gory Murder Religious Ceremonies.
{E} Sex With Animals.

"washed her hands in human gore" . . . .

Start quote.
Consider the bloodlust and violence of the Canaanite deity Anath, the patroness
of both war and sex.

The late archaeologist William Albright describes the Canaanite deity Anath's
massacre in the following gory scene.

The blood was so deep that she waded in it up to her knees -- nay, up to her neck.
Under her feet were human heads, above her human hands flew like locusts.

In her sensuous delight she decorated herself with suspended (human) heads while
she attached (human) hands to her girdle.

Her joy at the butchery is described in even more sadistic language. Her liver swelled
with laughter, her heart was full of joy, the liver of Anath (was full of) exultation.

Afterwards Anath was satisfied and washed her hands in human gore before
proceeding to other occupations.
End quote.

The above quote regarding Anath is from Is God A Moral Monster: Making Sense
Of The Old Testament God, by Paul Copan, page 159

So?

So the following seems very reasonable . . . .

"However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an
inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy
them-the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites-as
the LORD your God has commanded you. Otherwise, they will teach you
to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and
you will sin against the LORD your God. __Deuteronomy 20:16-18

. . . . . in light of:
The Sins Of The Canaanites: Blood-Lust, Murder, Incest, Sex With Animals.

The Canaanites were prosperous and successful.. We know a great deal more about them since the discovery of Ras Shamra and the Ugarit writings... and archaeology has really helped.

This is more about demonizing the neighbors than the Cananites being evil. Most serious scholars now think the Hebrews were Northcoast Canaanites and Abraham was from Urfa near Haran.

Archaeology would help more if states like Syria wouldn't prevent research once discovering of their significance to pre-Canaanite Hebrew civilization. Look the city of Ebla. Ras Shamra confirms most of what was already known from the Hebrew texts.

This was unlikely about demonization, since the Hebrew texts are focused mainly on harsh self-criticism than towards any other people. More so that the findings you've mentioned essentially confirm what was mostly known from those writings.

Ras Shamra predates the Hebrews.. There are 4-5 languages in the Ugarit writings.

All the evidence points to the Canaanites being successful.. Even you still demonize not just the Canaanites but current neighbors as well.

Read Clean Break Strategy.

And all your evidence confirms the Hebrew texts in detail,
if you actually read beyond the headline.

"Ras Shamra predates the proto Hebrew civilization"- based on what?

Jewish scholars are using the Ugaritic text to better translate the Hebrew scriptures. ..but there are 4 other semitic languages older than Hebrew.

Actually the opposite,
that's why Syria prevented further research of Ebla.

It's fascinating stuff.

Quartz Hill School of Theology
www.theology.edu/ugarit.htm
The Ugaritic texts make it clear that the religion of lBaal had to do with the necessities of life, the crops and food on which survival depended. Moreover, that fundamental appeal may have been bolstered by a further attraction: there is debate among scholars as to the role of sexual activity in the Ugaritic worship of Baal; in the mythology, the appetites of Baal for sex and violence are considerable.

Quartz Hill School of Theology
www.theology.edu/ugaritic/ugram07.htm
The infinitive, in Ugaritic as in other Semitic languages, can simply be the noun used as an infinitive. Again, this can only be determined by the context of the words used. 2- Stems: Ugaritic, like Hebrew, makes use of various stems (like Piel, Pual, etc.).

Contradicting your previous claim.
right in the first sentence,
from your link:

As in Hebrew, there are two tenses in Ugaritic; perfect and imperfect.

Goes back to about 6,000 BC... or earlier.

Kingdoms of Syria - Ugarit - History Files
Although Ugarit was probably occupied much earlier, its first permanent settlement seems to date to around 6000 BC, at which point a fortified wall was put up around it. The city was located on the Syrian coast, and remains within modern Syria.

The settlement, not the text.
The texts are from the around 1200-1450 BC.

That's exactly the same period as you know who?

Some of the texts are older and refer to the mythos of Sumer or the Egyptian Book of the Dead.

Genesis and Exodus were not written until after the Babylonian exile.

It seems pretty clear that only the elite could read and write. Everyone else was illiterate.

Which of those texts are older?

Still nothing surada?

Aula Orientalis 25 (2007) 237-254 237 The GilgameŇ° epic at Ugarit Andrew R. Daniel Arnaud‚Äôs brand-new collection of Babylonian library tablets from Ugarit (Arnaud 2007). No wonder the Hebrew god told his people to murder every man, woman and child and all the beasts of the field along with them. I guess genocide was ok for god to do in that case.

He'd just do it himself if such a god were that powerful and upset. Drones are all the rage nowadays. Same idea. Same disgusting result. Only, look ma, no dirty hands! What's for dinner?

That give you any hints? they were the same, although different tribes.

The Canaanite migrants brought with them cultic practices and images of their traditional gods. A major Canaanite god was El, and the phrase ‚ÄėEl has conquered‚Äô gives us the word Isra‚Äôel. The Canaanite god El had a ghostly presence in a host of Jewish heroes: Dan-i-El; Ezek-i-El; Sam-u-El, Ish-ma-El, El-i-jah, El-o-him, etc.

that's why Syria prevented further research of Ebla.

Ebla: Its Impact on Bible Records - Institute for Creation ...
The new findings at Ebla are possibly the most significant discovery yet made so far as they relate to the background of early Bible times. The impact on some areas of Biblical knowledge will indeed be startling. Where Ebla is Located … and the Work Begins Tell Mardikh -- the ancient Ebla -- is on the main road to Aleppo in Northern Syria, being not quite half way between Hamath and Aleppo.

Canaanite Phoenician Origin of the God of the Israelites
Specifically, the Canaanite religion impacted Israelite religion with influential elements from Babylonian and Egyptian religions. The Canaanite God El. The Israelite religion began as a henotheistic offshoot of the Canaanite worship of El, along with his secondary epithet Yahweh which refers to El Yahweh Sabaoth often translated as Lord of hosts.
