The Real Zelensky

The Ukrainian president doesn’t like the so-called Minsk Protocol and has refused to meet its basic requirements. As a result, the ethnically-charged, fratricidal war that has engulfed Ukraine for the last 8 years, continues to this day with no end in sight

No, most Americans don't know of this Minsk protocal, or that is key to their civil war there .....

So far all i know is we instigated a coup in '14, which morphed into a civil war, and now war w/ Russia

have i got it so far?

Who's "Zalansky?"

Your Russian to English Google translation needs some work.

Zelensky is a man. He's in the streets with his people. The world loves him. Unlike Putin, who is hiding in a bunker in the Urals. Everybody hates Russia now.

Typical post of a corporate media dupe. Oh brother! Dupe all the way.

Z has provoked war with Russia, thus causing tremendous suffering for Ukrainians. He knew he had no chance, but did it anyway. He’s taking orders from DC.

You mean he provoked Russia into invading the Crimea? Had nothing to do with Russia wanting a blue water port that didn't ice over in winter, right? Those two rebel regions in Ukraine? You know why they are rebel regions, right? Because Russians moved there during the Soviet Era. Using your logic, if enough Muslims move into Dearborn and then stretch out through the rest of Michigan, and then decide to cede from the Union, anything the US does to stop that is the US's fault. Yes, that is how shit your logic is.

Lol. Really?

You just admitted knowing nothing about Crimea. It has been part of Russia since Catherine the Great…ops, you don’t know who she is. Google her.

You didn’t know Russia has had a naval port in the Crimea for centuries. So much for the warm water port idea the corporate media lied to you about. You also didn’t know Crimea held a vote and 80% voted to RETURN to Russia rather than stay with Ukraine.

Bill Casey was right then and even more so now. GET INFORMED DUMB ASS!

I’m sure you’re completely unaware of the many experts who've warned against NATO expansion and specifically against including Ukraine, FOR MANY YEARS.

…but the American warmongers and Ukrainian Nazis won out…

Zelensky has shown courage and reversed his previous political unpopularity by his role during this mad, bloody and irrational invasion by dictator Putin. Putin’s really stupid invasion was based on a host of miscalculations and has failed in all its aims. The U.S. is winning its gamble here, Ukrainian nationalism is emerging stronger than ever, and this “proxy war” will only weaken Russia and threaten world peace as long as it continues. Putin must withdraw his troops now!

I still oppose formal Eastern expansion of NATO, and point out this war can continue for another generation over Crimea and Donbass without a diplomatic settlement.

There is no doubt Putin is a dictator and warmonger. He deserves much of the blame for this war. However failing to recognize Z’s actions which contributed to this war, is short sighted. Z could have easily avoided war but instead chose war.

Actually, Zelensky could not have “easily avoided war.” By the time of his election — as one promising and seeking better relations with Russia after Poroshenko’s rightwing pro-Western government proved unpopular — it would have been almost impossible for him to adhere to Minsk2 or even abstractly recognize “Crimea’s right to self-determination” and still remain in power. Indeed, the logic of events and power of hard nationalists and Banderite elements (who opposed all compromise) meant that he could not backtrack. The consensus U.S. foreign policy, embodied by people like neo-con Victoria Nuland and endorsed by Biden/Clinton etc, of course also utterly limited his room to maneuver.

Putin himself was a prisoner of his own authoritarian ultra-nationalist ideology and propaganda. He acted irrationally and fell into the Western trap, dreaming that shear military power and brutality could win out in this instance. Now, if he is not overthrown from within his own police and security state apparatus, Russia’s people will suffer terribly.

I expect Belarus will probably eventually be “liberated.” The West and its Wall Street version of democracy is winning. Autocracy is losing. But the threat of war, nuclear war, remains real, even if the far-flung Russian state is torn to pieces.

Gipper, your extreme libertarian views and hostility to the U.S. “Establishment” are not helping you to see reality here. Theorists like Mearsheimer (so-called “offensive realists”) can sometimes be helpful in analyzing real geo-politics, but of course they also are not the arbiters of events. Russia’s fundamental situation makes it uniquely unstable as a “great power.”
