The handful of Muslim-Arabs living there for some generations were either...

* Immigrants themselves

* Descendants of ancient Hebrews who "went over to the Dark side" (Islam) after death threats and centuries of Dhimmi taxes.

This is just the inheritors of the Old Religion that formerly held sway there, reclaiming the place for themselves.
